Lady Eagles struggle to find rhythm against Cameron University

The Lady Eagles basketball team turned a 20-point deficit into a 68-62 loss against Cameron University on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball Head Coach Stephanie Findley said the connection between the team and the basket was severed with the greater distance shots.

“We were really cold most of the game,” Findley said. “They were shooting the ball well – that’s where they beat us, at the 3-point line. We hardly hit any 3s.”

The Lady Eagles shot 29.7 percent for 2-point baskets and 16 percent from behind the arch, compared to the Aggies’ 43.1 percent and 33.3 percent, respectively.

Cameron dominated the first quarter with 27 points to the Lady Eagles’ seven.

Oklahoma Christian started to make a comeback, though, ramping up their defense to cause 20 turnovers and 47 rebounds as the offense turned up the aggression.

“I was pleased with how we at the end fought to the basket and we got ourselves to the free-throw line,” Findley said. “Just that whole effort in the last five minutes, when we could’ve just quit but kept fighting, made it exciting at the end.”

Junior Sarah Parker led Oklahoma Christian with a double-double – 17 points and 11 rebounds – and shot 5-7 from the free-throw line.

Addy Clift recorded nine points, four rebounds and three steals while McKenzie Stanford, Daisha Gonzaque, Hannah Holasek and Emma Gade contributed seven points each and a combined total of 16 rebounds.

Despite Saturday’s “exciting comeback,” Findley said her team’s greatest weakness in this season was a lack of scoring in road games.

“We’re just not scoring with the ball and we’re not finding their shooters and contesting their shooters with our defense,” Findley said. “How do you know when your team is ready to play? Game speed is different than practice speed and so you have to get used to that because things are faster and more hectic. I’m hoping it’ll come with more experience.”

The Lady Eagles face Southwestern Oklahoma State University on the road Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
