Every week, The Talon interviews a member of the Oklahoma Christian University community, a “Newsmaker,” to answer questions about their role on campus.
On March 25, The Talon interviewed Oklahoma Christian’s mascot, Ike the Eagle.
Are there any requirements to be Ike the Eagle?
“Oh, you know, nothing too crazy, basically the usual stuff of any eagle. All I do is wake up around four or so every morning, because of course the early bird gets the worm. I wake up early so I can eat all my grains and seeds and worms and bugs.
Which mascot could you take in a fight?
“You know what, I think Jay Hawk at Kansas University. I bet I could take him on. He’s a bit too crazy and he is really funny looking.”
Are you offended that everyone has Eagle bucks and not just you?
“I mean, yeah, if you really think about it, my face is on them, so I mean, it is really not fair. They’re basically mine.”
Are there any certain workouts you do to maintain your Ike-ish figure?
“Well, I do a couple flies around the Eagle trail a time or two. Also, I do little bit of some wing stretches. Most importantly, every Tuesday afternoon, only on Tuesdays, I have to go on a 10-mile run. I’m flying so much, I have to work on my legs. Never skip leg day. But other than that, it’s all natural.”
Which social club do you think embodies Ike the most?
“Oh, it’s got to be Alpha. Yeah, it has to be Alpha. Or it may even be Delta. I truly love them both”
What is your favorite thing to eat in the Caf?
“I mean, this is kind of cliché, but it has to be the orange chicken. It’s a classic. You know, run of the mill. I wake up and think “Oh, I hope the Caf is good”. Of course, the Caf is always good. Then I see they have orange chicken. It makes it even better. Clear go-to easy winner, orange chicken.”
What is Ike’s favorite Bible verse?
“Galatians 1:6-10. It is a really good verse, and it’s basically about am I serving the world, or am I serving God? Because if I cared about what the world thinks of me then can I truly be a servant of Christ? It’s a big and long but it is an awesome verse.”
Ike’s favorite verse:
Galatians 1: 6-10 “6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
