The intramural basketball season plays a major role in determining overall standings across Oklahoma Christian University intramural athletics, and this year both the men’s and women’s divisions are shaping up to be among the closest races in recent memory.
On the men’s side, freshman Elijah Cleary has emerged as a standout for Kappa Sigma Tau, helping push his team into first place through disciplined defense and strong team chemistry. Cleary credits much of their success to mutual respect on the court.
“I think we are playing so well together because we respect each other’s playing styles too much,” Cleary said. “I also think our defensive mindset is what has been very successful.”
For Cleary, intramurals have provided not just competition but community building.
“Playing in a club has given me a strong sense of camaraderie,” he said. One unexpected highlight has been the crowd support,” Cleary said. “My favorite part is playing in front of the fans. I didn’t think people would show up for an intramural game, but I was wrong.”

Cleary also emphasized the character of his teammates, noting that basketball often reveals who people really are.
“Basketball can bring out the worst in people, and the people on my team are the kind of people who have a strong character on and off the court,” Cleary said.
Despite his impact as a freshman, Cleary remains grounded.
“I am blessed immensely to be able to play basketball, and it is by the power of God alone that keeps me able to play,” Cleary said.
Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Sydney Hampton has helped lead Lambda Chi Zeta to the top of the standings, fueled by energy, encouragement and a tight-knit team culture.
“Playing with my club is one of the best feelings ever,” Hampton said. “It is just such an encouraging and competitive group that knows how to have fun.”
Hampton highlighted how quickly her team has bonded this season.
“Every new season brings a new group of girls,” Hampton said. “You have to learn how to bounce off each other and this team has really meshed together.”
The atmosphere surrounding Lambda games has been a major part of Hampton’s experience.
“My favorite part of this basketball season is how hype it has been so far,” Hampton said. “From each teammate cheering when a shot is made or the other members of Lambda screaming and dancing the whole game, there has just been a really fun atmosphere every single time I show up to the court.”
She also reflected on what the season has taught her about teamwork and resilience.

“Playing with this group showed me how important encouraging teammates are,” Hampton said. “Everyone has days when they airball, but the right people help you laugh it off and try again, on the court and in life.”
As both divisions head toward playoffs, Cleary, Hampton, and their teams remain focused on finishing strong in what has become a pivotal season for intramurals. With Kappa and Lambda currently leading their respective divisions, the race for overall standings is far from over and the energy in the gym suggests the best is still yet to come.
