The Oklahoma Christian University women’s basketball team fell short of an upset against No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M University on Saturday.
Led by McKenzie Stanford with 19 points, the upset bid was lost when the Lady Buffs put together a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to seal the 76-70 victory.
Senior Sydney Hill said she was very pleased with the way her team played and fought till the end. “On a big stage like this, I was very proud of the way our girls played and fought hard,” Hill said. “Obviously I would have liked for a better ending, but I believe this was a good sign for our team that we competed at a high level like this.”
Oklahoma Christian forced 27 Lady Buff turnovers, which was a huge reason the Lady Eagles led for 20 minutes of the game.
Sarah Parker knocked down a long 3-pointer to give the team the lead at 58-54 with a little over six minutes to go in the game. But West Texas A&M struck back with six unanswered points and kept the lead for the duration of the game.
Alongside Stanford’s 19, Addy Clift added 14 and Hill scored 10, highlighted by three 3-pointers.
Stanford’s 3-pointer in the second quarter gave the Lady Eagles their biggest lead at 19-12. Then the Buffs hung around to trail 26-25 at the halfway mark.
A 9-0 run in the fourth quarter, capped off by a long 3-pointer from Hill made it 55-51 in Oklahoma Christian’s favor. But West Texas A&M took control from there to claim the game.
The Oklahoma Christian women’s basketball team plays again Tuesday when it travels to Bethany to take on Southern Nazarene University.
