Eagles land fifth at Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic

The Oklahoma Christian University men’s golf team finished fifth, behind Sam Johnston’s individual tie for a fourth place finish, at the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic on Monday and Tuesday.

At the Hackberry Creek Country Club, Johnston fired two three-under-par 69s on the 7,064-yard course to place himself tied for third after the first day.

The weather was in Johnston’s favor as the temperature sat in the low 80s with little to no wind. The conditions allowed Johnston to record 11 birdies on the first day. Johnston led the field in birdies along with the entire Eagles’ team, at 38 birdies.

Three other Eagles finished in the top 20, including Manuel Hernandez and Zac Schaefer, who each posted first-day scores of 145 to tie them both at 15th. Alejandro Venequela hit rounds of 72 and 74 to tie him at 19th at 146.

Schaefer said he thought his round was “boring” for him personally, but a good team day overall.

“We played pretty well the first day, but there was plenty room for improvement,” Schaefer said. “I led the field in pars after the first day with 25, so it was a bit of an uneventful day for me.”

Ethan Smith and Juan Pallach rounded out the scoring for the Eagles and sat tied for 47th and tied for 65th, respectively.

Schaefer said that he and the team needed to make specific improvements before the second day.

“We didn’t take advantage of the par-5s on Monday, which we normally lead the field in,” Schaefer said. “So, if we could’ve took care of those on Tuesday, we could have finished higher.”

On the second day, Johnston fired a four-over-par 76 to drop to a tie for fourth, six strokes behind the winner.

Venezuela and Schaefer finished tied for 19th at 219 after final rounds of 73 and 74, respectively.

Hernandez shot a 78 on the final day to finish 34th and Pallach finished tied for 47th after shooting a 74.

Smith, playing individually, recorded the best score for the Eagles on the final day with a four-under-par 68, to tie him for 21st.

The Eagles will play in the Heartland Conference championship on April 17-19 in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, at Slick Rock Golf Course.
