Texas vs. OU: What Can We Learn?

As Week 6 of college football wraps up, what can we take away from the Red River Rivalry? For most anyone living here in Oklahoma, it was a big win for OU, but what does it mean?

Four weeks into the season, OU had been written off as a nothing team. However, going up against No. 1 Texas, the Sooners showed they still have the talent and skill that might not have been recognized before. While both teams played sloppy at times, a game like the Red River Rivalry is important. If Oklahoma wants any chance at the playoffs, they will need to keep winning. If they can continue to knock off the big names, it is not impossible.

As for Texas, they have plenty to clean up. While it may come as a shock to many that UT lost, by watching them this season, one would have noticed some unhealthy patterns. Have they beaten some big names? Yes, but it has not always been pretty. Texas is not a team right now that can stay consistent. If they want a good chance to go the distance this year, they need to start making some serious changes, specifically on offense.

This leaves questions as to  what the problem might be. With a brand-new offensive line, a great running back, and one of the best receivers in the nation, where could the problem stem from? It may be early to start the Arch critique, it is hard not to look in his direction. It is definitely worth mentioning, though, that Texas’ offensive line did not play its best during the game, which could be one reason Arch Manning did not look fantastic. Before placing all the blame on Manning, Texas needs to look at the bigger picture and figure out how to get its offense working consistently.

To wrap up, Texas has not played like a true No. 1 team, and Oklahoma still has a long road ahead of it. If the Sooners want to make the playoffs, they cannot rely on one big win to carry them through the rest of the season. However, it seems like both teams have plenty to work on if they want a chance at meeting again later this year.
