The Oklahoma Christian University softball team stole the first game of a doubleheader from Texas Woman’s University but couldn’t hold its momentum on Tuesday night and walked away with a split doubleheader.
The Lady Eagles dominated the Denton, Texas field in with a 10-0 victory over the Pioneers.
“We responded to their mistakes and made them pay for it,” right fielder Kelsie Finch said. “We played a great game all around. We had great chemistry today.”
Bridget White started off the scoring streak in the second inning, sprinting home on Lacey Davidson’s single to center field. Kayla Eichler crossed the plate next followed Haley Squire’s two-RBI single that sent Alexus Vanlandingham and Davidson home.
Jourdan Bruce scored unearned on Eichler’s hit in the top of the fifth, and Squire sent home Vanlandingham again in the sixth. Davidson utilized the short stop’s error on Sheridan Bond’s hit to record the team’s seventh run.
Madison Nordyke ended the game with a three-RBI homer, bringing in Bond and Vanlandingham with her to celebrate the 10-0 win.
Pitcher Madison Hagood took the win to increase her personal record to 11-8.
“We took advantage of their mistakes and built off that momentum,” Finch said. “We hit the ball well and were able to string together hits. We played great defensively, too.”
The tides turned as Texas Woman’s rallied to avenge its home-field loss for game two.
The Pioneers sent two across the plate before the Lady Eagles countered with a run by Finch in the fourth. The Pioneers kept a tight rein, though, and scored twice more before the game ended 4-1 in their favor.
Kaylie Upton (4-4) took the loss on the mound and the team updated its record to 17-22.
The Lady Eagles will host St. Edward’s University in a three-game series starting Friday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
“I’m looking forward to this weekend,” Finch said. “Even though we came away with a split, I think this series at TWU will prepare us well because they are such a tough team.”
