College Football: Upsets and key games

The Purdue University Boilermakers defeated the previously No. 2-ranked Ohio State University Buckeyes 49-20 Oct. 20. Ohio State “struggled across the field,” committing ten penalties, failing to score in the red zone three of five tries and lacking defensive continuity. The Buckeyes fell out of the top-10 coming in as the 11th ranked program through week eight.

In other Big Ten news, the University of Michigan’s defense was “clicking on all cylinders,” limiting the production of Michigan State’s offense Oct. 20. This gave the Wolverines both the win and the Paul Bunyan trophy. The final score was 21-7.

OU vs. TCU

The University of Oklahoma resumed action after a bye week, beating Texas Christian University (TCU) 52-27 Oct. 20.

Oklahoma’s quarterback, Kyler Murray, threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns. Receivers CeeDee Lamb and Lee Morris averaged more than 18 yards per reception and combined for three of the four throwing touchdowns. In the backfield, Kennedy Brooks and Trey Sermon both rushed for more than 100 yards and combined for three scores.

The Sooner defense continued to give up substantial offensive yards despite linebacker Kenneth Murray’s production. Murray only has one game where he recorded fewer than ten tackles and recorded a 28-tackle game against Army earlier in the season. The TCU offense had seven players with more than 30 yards of total offense. The Horned Frogs quarterback Michael Collins threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns, but their offense was not enough to keep up with Oklahoma.

The Sooners will return to Norman, OK and play Kansas State University Oct. 27.

MLB: World Series preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox open game one of the 2018 World Series tonight at 7:09 p.m.

The Dodgers recently came off a game-seven win over the Milwaukee Brewers, demonstrating their lineup’s offensive depth and magnitude of the young talent they have on the mound.

The Boston Red Sox beat last years’ World Series champions, the Houston Astros, in five games. J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts, two potential American League MVP candidates, now lead the Red Sox in hopes of bringing a World Series ring back to Boston.

NBA: Ingram, Paul, Rondo suspended

In a Saturday-night matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets, Lakers’ guard Rajon Rondo and Rockets’ guard Chris Paul got into a physical altercation. Lakers’ forward Brandon Ingram contributed to the melee, throwing punches throughout the clash.

Ingram was given a four-game suspension for escalating the exchange, instigating the tension earlier by shoving Rockets’ guard James Harden and aggressively confronting an official. Rondo will faced a three-game suspension, one more than that of Paul, due strictly because he threw the first punch. The three will serve their suspensions with no pay.

Golf: Koepka tops rankings

After winning the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in South Korea, Brooks Koepka is golf’s new No. 1. Koepka was able to take the spot away from the previous title-holder, Dustin Johnson, after shooting a combined 267 on the weekend, finishing the tournament four strokes ahead over the rest of the competition.

Gary Woodland kept things close for the majority of Sunday’s round until the 16th when Koepka was able to save birdie after hitting a fairway bunker thanks to his short game. Koepka capped the weekend off with an eagle on the 18th.

NFL: Mahomes sets record, Rams stay undefeated

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw four scoring passes Sunday night against the Cincinnati Bengals, winning 45-10.

This marks 22 touchdown passes in the first eight games of his career, breaking the previous NFL record of 21 held by Kurt Warner. Mahomes is closing in on the single-season record for the Chiefs franchise of 30, set by Len Dawson in 1964.

The Los Angeles Rams continue their perfect season, beating the San Francisco 49ers 39-10 Sunday evening. Rams running back Todd Gurley II continues to be a problem for defenses, rushing for two touchdowns in the contest.

The Rams will play the Green Bay Packers Oct. 28 as they look to remain unbeaten.
