The start of a new month provides Oklahoma Christian University students with numerous activities to get off campus and involved in the surrounding communities. From cave camping to a creative writing festival, the following events are intended to help students see why this is the perfect time to get out and about in Oklahoma.
Montmartre Chalk Art Festival – Chickasha, OK
April 4
Visitors can take part in a judged sidewalk chalk art competition at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
Scissortail Creative Writing Festival – Ada, OK
April 4-6
Featuring more than 50 authors from Oklahoma and beyond, this annual event brings together award-winning writers, academics and the general public for two days of readings. The event also includes a massive book sale.
The Color Run – Tulsa, OK
April 6
Race to the 5K finish through a rainbow of powdered colors at the annual Tulsa Color Run. The event features impromptu dancing, unicorn medals, groovy T-shirts and rainbow-colored sweatbands.
Light the Night Water Lantern Festival – Canadian, OK
April 6
Enjoy a day of rock climbing, archery, cornhole, a Ferris wheel and princess photo opportunities followed by the annual Light the Night Water Lantern Festival at Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park. According to its website, the one-day event also provides the opportunity to “write your messages on lanterns to say goodbye to a departed loved one, make a wish to the universe or write down and release something that’s been weighing you down. Just after sunset, launch your lanterns along with others’ and celebrate life with the breathtaking, illuminated display.”
Medieval Fair – Norman, OK
April 5-7
Visitors can journey to a time of kings, queens and knights in shining armor at Norman’s 43st annual medieval fair. The event features arts and crafts, food, games, a costume contest and a jousting tournament.
Azalea Festival – Muskogee, OK
April 1-30
Celebrating the blooming of azaleas, tulips, dogwoods and wisteria, Muskogee’s Honor Heights Park boasts 132 acres of manicured gardens with more than 30,000 azaleas in 625 varieties.
OKC Jazz Fest – Oklahoma City, OK
April 1-29
The sixth annual OKC Jazz Festival will feature jazz, jazz rock, hip-hop, rhythm and blues and other genres of music. Local and national artists will perform on both indoor and outdoor stages during the festival.
Cave Camping – Freedom, OK
April 1-Sept. 30
Spend a night in a cave this spring at the Alabaster Caverns State Park. With each group consisting of between three and 15 people, each person is required to have a hard hat, three independent light sources, a long sleeve shirt, long pants (or coveralls), water, a first aid kit and moisture barrier (small tarp or drop cloth).
