With homecoming finished, students need to look no further than the numerous hobby clubs on Oklahoma Christian University’s campus to fill their free time.
From fishing to crafting, there are clubs all around campus, without the coveted Greek letters, ready to welcome new students into the fold.
Students Emily Forster and Piper Dallmann recently began the Crafter’s Collective. This club emerged from a previous collection of students who met in the library to crochet. Now, the group aims to reach people of all crafts.
“The main mission of Crafter’s Collective is for all the crafty people on campus to have a little time during the semester dedicated solely to their projects, to swap ideas and just foster community on campus,” Forster said. “We want there to be a place where anyone and everyone can feel welcome — men are welcome to come learn to crochet! If you can think it, you can make it. Crafting isn’t just about quilts and scarves.”
Crafter’s Collective meets every other Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. in the Duncan room. There are bring-your-own craft days as well as various themed events, with all necessary materials provided unless otherwise stated. To get involved, students can attend the next scheduled meeting or follow the Crafter’s Collective on Instagram @crafterscollective.oc.
For students who prefer persuasion over glittery creations, Taking Sides offers students the opportunity to casually discuss Christian-based debate topics. The fearless student leader, Shannon Fagen, shared the goal behind this organization.
“Taking Sides was started to model a form of civil discourse in front of the student body. Also, we want to tackle some difficult topics about faith and society,” Fagen said. “The goal is to introduce the audience to sides of an argument that they may not have thought of before or to make them think about an issue in a new light.”
On Monday evenings at 5:00 p.m. in the Duncan room, students select a debate topic and brainstorm arguments for both sides. When the argument is developed enough, two students volunteer to debate the topic on Wednesday during Taking Sides chapel. However, if the dazzling lights of Baugh Auditorium during chapel are not for you, Fagen assures students not to worry.
If the dazzling lights of Baugh Theater during Taking Sides are not for you, “students involved in taking sides do not have to debate,” said Fagen.
The weekly meeting simply serves as a collaborative effort to assist those who volunteer to debate.
If neither crafting nor debating strikes a student’s fancy, there is always the brand-new fishing club.
According to club leader Quinn Mauck in a Student Announcement post: “Our goal is to connect anglers across campus who want to talk about fishing, teach and help those new to the sport, work to help improve fishing opportunities in the area through service projects, connect to the community, potentially go on fishing trips together, and bring a strong Christian presence to the fishing community.”
If students are interested in joining this group of anglers, Mauck encourages you to email him at quinn.mauck@eagles.oc.edu to get involved.
Finally, for students searching for a fishless, glitterless, argument-avoiding, hands-on activity, the chess club allows students to practice their chess skills and meet other lovers of the game. Meetings are Mondays at 6 p.m. in room 231 of the Prince Engineering Center.
For more information, the chess club’s Instagram page, @theocchessclub, intermittently posts meeting times and other club updates.
Smaller interest clubs offer students the opportunity to be involved in smaller hobby-based communities outside of the all-consuming culture of social clubs. Here at Oklahoma Christian, there is a club for everyone.
