Campus improvements aim to strengthen community

Oklahoma Christian University is undertaking a series of campus improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility, relocating offices, and fostering a stronger sense of community for students, staff, and visitors.

John Hermes, chief information and campus operations officer, discussed some of the goals behind recent and ongoing campus improvements.

“Through all campus improvements, one of our goals is to create a campus culture where students, families, alumni, and guests feel welcomed and connected the moment they walk onto our campus,” Hermes said. “Consolidating key services in central locations and enhancing our facilities strengthens our sense of community, making engagement easier and more impactful.”

Hermes shared information about improvements recently completed on campus.

“Over the past year, the university has focused on enhancing student-facing services, academic support, and campus infrastructure. A number of key offices were relocated last summer to improve accessibility and the student experience,” Hermes said. “These relocations provide more centralized access for students and visitors, improve departmental collaboration, and strengthen our welcome center and student support on campus. In addition, the university has continued investing in technology infrastructure, classroom improvements, and other student service enhancements.”

The relocated offices include the College of Outreach and Innovation, Advancement, Alumni and Career Services, Creative Services and Events, and International Programs.

Hermes said these relocations are part of a strategic effort to improve convenience and enhance the experience for students and visitors.

“The upgraded spaces feature refreshed interiors, improved signage and wayfinding, and modern technology tools,” Hermes said. “These spaces are all designed to help students engage more easily with campus services. This strategic realignment also allows departments with shared missions to work more closely together, benefiting students.”

Looking ahead, Hermes said the university continues to plan for additional developments and facility upgrades.

“In addition to continued campus enhancements to classroom spaces, upcoming projects include phased improvements to admissions support and student support spaces, as well as upgrades to outdoor gathering areas,” Hermes said. “These efforts focus on strengthening our community life, supporting enrollment growth, and ensuring a welcoming and functional campus environment.”

Hermes also highlighted the importance of stewardship, especially at a Christian university dedicated to serving others.

“The university remains committed to responsible stewardship of its facilities and finances. All campus improvements and office relocations are guided by long-term planning, careful budgeting, and student centered priorities,” Hermes said. “When possible, the university repurposes existing space rather than constructing new facilities. This approach maximizes value while minimizing long-term energy and operating costs.”
