Class vs. Club: Freshmen Navigate New Spring Sing Traditions

This spring semester has offered freshmen many unique experiences, from rushing social clubs to preparing for Spring Sing, a beloved campus tradition. Unlike upperclassmen, who perform with their clubs, most freshmen will take the stage together as a class.

Nora Watson, Spring Sing freshman director, explains why the freshmen performance remains separate, even as students join clubs.

“With certain clubs being so big, they wouldn’t have enough room on stage for their freshmen,” Watson said. “I think the school also wants to have freshmen be involved and bond with each other for one last thing.”

She describes the excitement of being in a leadership role in charge of the freshman show this year.

“I’ve always wanted to direct a Spring Sing show, so the fact that I got to direct the freshman show was super awesome,” Watson said.

Watson reflects on what makes this year’s freshman Spring Sing an experience unlike any other.

“Performing with my class is awesome because I still get to bond with my fellow freshmen even while we’re in social clubs,” Watson said.

Watson also acknowledges the challenges that come with balancing club commitments and the freshman show.

“The one thing I would change would be how our practice times work. Due to intramurals, we have a three-hour practice every Wednesday night, which is super long, but we will get through it,” Watson said.

Hayden Scott, another freshman, is joining Theta’s show this year to help the club fill spots, but says performing in the freshman show would have been a meaningful experience.

“I already knew that I was going into Spring Sing knowing everybody in the freshman class, and being able to perform with them gave me a sigh of relief,” Scott said.

Scott hints at what makes this year’s Spring Sing experience a unique opportunity for freshmen.

“We’ve never performed for Spring Sing, so we are all getting to do the same thing at the same time, and no one has an advantage over anybody else really,” Scott said.

Looking ahead, she believes freshmen should have the freedom to choose how they want to experience Spring Sing.

“I think it should be up to the person to decide if they want to be a part of the freshman class one last time for Spring Sing or if they want to be with their club,” Scott said.
