With the softball season coming to an end, the competition was closer than in previous years. Sunday night had its ups and downs for each team, with several games determining who would have a chance to compete for a championship.
Chi Lambda Phi and Delta Gamma Sigma started the night for the men’s division, and it was an exhilarating game to watch. Chi took an early lead and seemed to have the game in their hands. However, Delta exploded for a 10-point inning to tie the game with Chi. Once Delta gained momentum, it seemed like Chi couldn’t find an answer. The night ended with a deep pop-up hit by Jackson Ortiz, bringing himself and two other Delta guys home and securing the victory for Delta.
Gamma Rho and the freshman girls also played Sunday night, and if you were hoping for a tight game, this was not the one to watch. Gamma defeated the freshman girls, beating them by nearly 20 points. While Gamma tends to have an advantage with their numbers, the freshman girls will need to figure out how to overcome that if they hope to become a force during football season.
Later that night, Kappa Sigma Tau and the freshmen guys faced off, with the freshmen taking a substantial loss to Kappa. This sent the freshmen to play Chi for the third-place spot. It was certainly not the outcome either team had hoped for. However, the freshmen could bounce back for football, and there are high expectations for them to remain a recognizable force on the intramural fields.
Chi also had a strong team this year and was not satisfied with the outcome. However, as stated in a previous article, Beginning of the Intramural Year Chi’s athletic directors knew going into the season that softball would be a challenge for them. They will no doubt come ready for football, where they will return as defending champions after winning the football championship last year.
Lambda Chi Zeta was scheduled to play Theta Theta Theta; however, Theta forfeited, sending Lambda to the championship and Theta to a battle for third place that would ultimately not happen either. The result did not come as much of a shock to most people. Lambda has proven time and time again to be a powerhouse team. While they don’t have the numbers that Gamma does, they seem to have the athletic ability to match them and often beat other teams.
It was a fantastic night for softball on Monday, with some of the coolest weather we’ve had all semester. It seemed like everyone showed up and showed out for the games. The atmosphere was electric, with screams being heard from across campus and plenty of hype surrounding every game.
The night started with the freshmen guys and Chi battling for third place. After a hard-fought game, the freshmen came out on top, scoring 8 points to Chi’s 3. This will no doubt be important for the freshmen, keeping them in the running for points. While this may seem like a difficult place for Chi to finish, it is almost exactly what happened to them last year, and we know how that turned out. Even with a rocky start, Chi has the ability to come back and win All Sports.
The freshmen girls and Theta were supposed to play for second and third place; however, Theta ultimately forfeited, giving the freshmen an automatic win. This puts both freshman teams in a similar position, and like most years, all eyes will be on both the men’s and women’s teams to see what they can accomplish this year.
Lambda and Gamma met, as usual, in the championship. This rivalry is well known across campus, giving the game plenty of hype and excitement. Lambda had a strong season in softball and was expected to come in and beat Gamma. Lambda did not disappoint the fans. While it wasn’t a high-scoring game, it was still an excellent performance, with Lambda winning 5-3. It was an impressive moment for the team, showing that size doesn’t necessarily mean skill. This could add some pressure going into football for Lambda to keep up its winning streak.
Later that night, Kappa and Delta met again for the men’s championship. While the start seemed like it would be a tight race with the score tied 3-3, Kappa quickly pulled away from Delta. With a final score of 9-3, Delta could never quite find the momentum needed to catch back up. Kappa brought intensity and positive energy throughout the game, backed by a huge group of supporters who stayed with them for the entire game.
With softball officially in the books, Kappa and Lambda now have the momentum of championship victories behind them as the intramural season moves forward. The freshmen teams also showed they can compete, while Chi, Delta, Gamma, and Theta will all have something to prove in the next sport. If softball was any indication, this year’s intramural competition should be one to watch.
