Intramural Update: Your 2024-2025 All Sports Champions are…

Matches in the pickleball doubles tournament and men’s swim meet this week have resulted in victories that put clubs in position for all sports titles. Stay tuned for a huge announcement about the men’s 2024-25 all sports champions.

Women’s

Gamma Rho may be down, but they are not out for the count just yet. A strong pickleball performance combined with a weaker one from current all sports leader Lambda Chi Zeta keeps the door open for a comeback, at least for one more week. Soccer picks up immediately after spring break, so get ready for the beautiful game to kick off.

Men’s

A dominant first and second place performance in pickleball set them up for success, and meant their third place performance in the swim meet was enough: The men of Chi Lambda Phi are the 2024-2025 all sports champions. Athletic director Parker Landes spoke on what it felt like finally securing the win.

“We’re really excited and super proud, especially considering the rough start that we had,” Landes said. “We had a lot of guys step up for us this year, from Cole, Marcus, and Quinn in volleyball (our turning point), to Carter and Landon in basketball, to Luke, Jackson, Logan and Jeremiah in minor sports. They all did a great job.”

After a weather delay setting it back a couple weeks, the men’s swim meet took place. Kappa Sigma Tau’s Nathaniel Whitehead left the competition in his bubbles, winning every individual event minus one, the 25 meter freestyle. The lack of swimming depth in Kappa would cost him however, as Delta Gamma Sigma won the overall meet.

Women’s Intramural Athletes of the Week: Natalie Smith and Kate Paulsen (Gamma Rho)

The smaller pickleball bracket resulted in some teams having to play more games than others, and no room for error. That would not hold back Natalie Smith (left) and Kate Paulsen (right) however, as the two worked as a unit and took home the championship. Gamma needs a significant number of wins in the upcoming tournaments and the soccer season, but Smith and Paulsen are keeping them in fighting shape.

First Runner Up: Isabel Gonzalez and Ella Hinds (Freshmen)

Making a strong run on the opposite side of the bracket, Isabel Gonzalez and Ella Hinds took down both all sports contending duos in a win over Gamma in quarters and a win over Lambda in semis. It will be interesting to see if and where these two will rush next year.

Second Runner Up: Caitlin Thompson and Raquel Fanelli (Theta Theta Theta)

After a dominant singles run last semester, Raquel Fanelli was back. Joined by Caitlin Thompson, the two played tight, only losing to eventual champions Paulsen and Smith. With Fanelli only in her junior year, expect her to be back for vengeance in the fall.

Men’s Intramural Athlete of the Week: Nathaniel Whitehead (Kappa Sigma Tau)

To put it in perspective, Nathaniel Whitehead scored 46 points on his own out of Kappa’s total of 62. The most dominant swimmer in recent history, Whitehead could not be stopped. Winning all but one individual event is a performance that cannot be rivaled by any other swimmer in either division this year. The rest of the intramural teams may rest easy knowing that Whitehead should graduate this spring.

First Runner Up: Thompson Whitehead and Isaac Duvall (Chi Lambda Phi)

Running the gauntlet and coming out on top, Thompson Whitehead and Isaac Duvall could not be stopped. Getting the key win that locked the all sports title as theirs, Whitehead and Duvall’s toughest competition would be their fellow members of Chi. Plenty of Chi athletes can take credit in winning all sports, but Whitehead and Duvall were the final nail in the coffin.

Second Runner Up: Jack Brookshire (Delta Gamma Sigma)

For a while it looked like nobody other than Nathaniel Whitehead would win an event- enter Jack Brookshire. Not only did he get the win, he did so in a heat where the next closest finisher was almost three full seconds behind him. The lack of competition to pace him was irrelevant, as Brookshire went on to win key points in Delta’s win over Kappa. Brookshire will be here next year, stay tuned to see if he can defend his title.
