Intramural update: The A league brackets are set

While the men’s and women’s A leagues finished their regular season alongside the women’s B league, the men’s B and C league still have a few games left to wrap up this Sunday, Feb. 16.

Women’s

A quieter week from the women’s side only featured three games. Gamma Rho beat Beta Beta Sigma in the B league, and Lambda Chi Zeta beat Theta Theta Theta in the A and B league. While Lambda A may have relied more on an overwhelming offense to win over lockdown defense due to missing a few players, the B team was in complete control from start to finish. The real X-factor to this team is the superb coaching tactics from Kappa Sigma Tau’s Isaiah White and Jake Hergert.

Men’s

After winning against the Freshmen C team, then losing to Freshmen B, Chi Lambda Phi looked to win the rematch of last year’s A league championship against Kappa. The game was intense, with both teams having runs before Kappa pulled ahead by one and held onto the lead. The win puts Kappa A down as undefeated to end the regular season, setting up a rematch against Delta Gamma Sigma, a team they beat earlier this week. Chi will be taking on the Freshmen.

The B and C leagues still have some games to play this upcoming Sunday. While they have already locked in the one seed, the freshmen will play Kappa in the B league, while Delta and Chi get to preview their respective B league semifinal. These are the same matchups for C league, but the seeding is a little different. A Chi C win over Delta gives them the one seed, while a loss opens the door for a tiebreaker between Chi, Delta, and even the freshmen should they beat Kappa. Women’s Intramural Athlete of the Week: Shelby Lewis (Lambda Chi Zeta)

Working in the paint for Lambda’s offense, Shelby Lewis took initiative in the absence of some of her teammates, boxing out to get rebounds and keeping Lambda’s high-scoring offense in motion. Lewis will be key if Lambda A wants to stay undefeated.

First Runner Up: Joanna Hunter (Gamma Rho)

After a slower than expected start against Beta B, Joanna Hunter took over, winning out in the paint and helping Gamma pull away from Beta at the very end. With a tough bracket up ahead for Gamma B, expect Hunter to keep the ball rolling and the energy high.

Second Runner Up: Miki Booth (Theta Theta Theta)

For a while it looked like Theta would not score at all against Lambda B. That is when Miki Booth stepped up, scoring all the points for Theta. Booth worked hard against the Lambda zone and energy and aggressive offensive play is one to commended

Men’s Intramural Athlete of the Week: Jake Hergert (Kappa Sigma Tau)

From calm, offensive movement, to tight, physical defense, to draining threes, to slam dunks. Simply put, Jake Hergert can do it all. His ability to adjust from a slower paced game to a quicker, fast break game is elite, and his height and length plays a crucial role getting rebounds. Hergert is a nightmare matchup for all who have to face him, and he will be a player to watch in the playoffs.

First Runner Up: Quinn Martin (Chi Lambda Phi)

Using his strength to his advantage, Quinn Martin was a scoring machine for Chi this week. He led his team in points scored against Kappa, and combined his ability to box out anyone with quick steps and shots that seem like no one can defend. Martin will be a key piece in Chi’s offense if they want to win the A league this year

Second Runner Up: Bex Seaman (Freshmen Class)

One of the few to be able to boast 20+ points in a single game, Bex Seaman was on fire against Chi. His long three was hard to contest, especially combined with his shifty ball handling skills and moves in the paint. The freshmen are one win away from going perfect in the B league regular season, and Seaman is ready to take them there.
