Oklahoma Christian Students Share Spring Break Adventures

Curious how students at Oklahoma Christian University spent their week away from classes? The Talon asked four students about their adventures on break, and here’s what they said:

Sophomore Ella Hinds spent her Spring Break serving with the Edmond Church of Christ.

“For spring break, I went with Edmond Church of Christ to McAllen, Texas. For the first half, we put together VBS as well as doing some service projects for the people in the congregation. Then in the second half, we went to San Antonio for some fun. In San Antonio, there were several street performers that we got to talk to. One guy was playing a piano, and he was just playing gospel music and singing along with it. So we all sang with him. We did that for two nights,” Hinds said. “Then Friday night, we were walking around San Antonio, and there was this street performer playing his violin. He was talking to us and asked where we were from, we told him we were on a mission trip. He told us that he could play that Goodness of God. Then we went into this ice cream shop, and it was a Christian ice cream shop, and he told us the back story. I loved all the workers there; it was so cool. They make these dream boards, even the workers have a dream board. The owner helps them work towards their dreams. One thing I missed about Oklahoma Christian is that I forgot to bring enough pants for the trip.”

Senior Steven Porter enjoyed his Spring Break in Washington, D.C. alongside the Bible department.

“For spring break, I went on a Washington DC trip, and then I flew to McAllen, Texas for the Edmond Church of Christ mission trip. We left two days early before spring break started on that Thursday. We traveled to different monuments, museums, and specifically the Bible Museum. We went all over to learn more, see more and grow in our faith. Professor Mel Latorre and Dr. Beller were the sponsors. Anyone from the Bible department could go. Bible majors and Bible minors,” Porter said. “McAllen was a good time, also very influential to be able to help another church who is a sister and brother in Christ especially who speaks a different language and is on a lower income.”

Sophomore Rylee Cherry shared time with family over break.

For break, I went to Colorado to visit my grandma. It was nice being able to decompress and relax, like a reset. But I did miss being around everybody and our little rhythms that we get into in the week,” Cherry said. “A break is always good because I think we all [college students] like to push ourselves, and the way college works is at a very fast pace that has a lot of demand on you. We live at a faster pace than I think we were designed to operate at and so I think having a good break helps us take a step back, refocus on what’s important, and then fuel up to go again.”

Junior Cole Osburn participated in a Spring Break trip with his social club Delta Gamma Sigma.

“Me and a group of, I think it was 18 Delta guys went down to the South Padre Island to do some mission work in Harlingen. Then we had a few days to spend some time on the beach and go into Mexico. My favorite part was just hanging out with all the guys, getting a break from school, and just being able to hang out with everybody and not having too many worries on our hands,” Osburn said. “I did miss some of the friends that didn’t end up coming on the trip, and the ones that maybe went on a different trip.”
