Apartment invasion adds to safety concerns

Dean of Students Neil Arter held a meeting last night to address students’ concerns about a recent break-in at Oklahoma Christian University.

On Feb. 8 at 6:30 a.m., two female students woke up to an intruder in their Phase IV apartment. He had entered the apartment through an unlocked door, but left calmly after he was discovered. The suspect was described as an average-height, dark-complexioned man with a short beard wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

“In this situation, there seems to have been no forced entry, so make sure that your doors are locked and latched,” Arter said. “If you or your roommate has lost their key and are leaving a door or window unlocked, stop and lock the door, get a key and make sure you’re locking your doors.”

This is not the first time an incident like this has occurred.

“Several years ago we had an incident on campus with one of our apartments and it was a lot more involved than this,” Arter said. “Like many of you feel tonight, I felt kind of violated by some one coming into our world here.”

However, Arter said Oklahoma Christian is among the safer of university campuses.

“I want you to know that I do believe our campus is a safe place,” Arter said. “It’s made safer when we lock our doors and when we report suspicious things. I think we’re going to have a campus that is very vigilant at this point about being careful and being safe.”

Oklahoma City Police and Campus Police do not have any evidence suggesting this event was related to any of the previous reports about the trail, according to Arter.

Campus Police is on-duty 24 hours a day and will be increasing the surveillance in the apartment areas, according to Arter. Furthermore, Resident Directors and Resident Assistants will begin frequent checks to confirm that all doors and windows are locked.

Arter responded to student questions and took suggestions about increasing lighting, cameras, secure locks and other safety measures to prevent future incidents.

Following the question and answer portion of the meeting, Arter met privately with the men and asked them to provide any information they might hear regarding the incident, as he thinks they would more likely hear about it before the female students, if the incident involved a male student.

If you have information or see anything suspicious please call the Oklahoma Christian University Police Department at 405-425-5500.
