Hunter Bell, a 9-year-old third grader at Central Elementary School in Yukon, Oklahoma, was hit by a car while waiting in the pickup area in front of his school.

Police said an intoxicated grandmother was picking up her grandchildren on Jan. 16. The woman hit the gas instead of the brakes and jumped a curb, pinning Hunter against a wall. She has since been charged with a person injury accident while under the influence.

“My heart stopped,”  Ashley Bell, Hunter’s mom, said about according to Fox 25.

Hunter was rushed to OU Children’s Hospital, where he underwent a more than four hour long surgery. Three surgeries, two blood transfusions, 10 screws and a metal plate later, Hunter is alive. Since then, he’s gone through physical therapy and is recovering.

Discovering that the driver was uninsured, the family was faced with more than $400,000 in medical bills. His mother said their medical bills are now in the neighborhood of $300,000, but still unmanageable for their family.

In order to raise funds for the family’s expenses, the Yukon Police and Fire Departments teamed up for an event called “Hoops for Hunter,” a charity basketball game to support Hunter’s medical bills last night at the Yukon Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Center.

Hunter’s teammates played in the game alongside the firemen and policemen, which was preceded by a charity pasta dinner served by Johnny Carino’s Italian Restaurant. Game tickets and meal tickets were $5 each, and all of the proceeds went to the Hope for Hunter fund.

Those who attended received separate tickets for both the game and dinner, which were entered into drawings for dozens of door prizes donated by local community businesses and individuals. During halftime, there was a silent auction with some larger ticket items up for bid.

Following the game, Storm Shelters of OKC donated a 2-4 person F5 rated home storm shelter to the cause and it was raffled-off.
