Students at Oklahoma Christian University have formed a new club devoted to one sport: Ultimate Frisbee.
“We wanted to start the club so we can make it an official entity within the school and have a series of serious players who just want to come out and have fun,” freshman Zac Davenport said.
Oklahoma Christian had a Frisbee group in the past, but it was never organized or publicized. This time, there is a recognized club. The four cofounders, Davenport and seniors Kurtis Wiles, Denae Lee and Joshua Dacanay began the Ultimate Frisbee Club, the first of its kind.
“Every single person I talked to about starting the club was on board with it, from Neil Arter to Summer Lashley, they were all very supportive,” Wiles said.
Already, the newly formed Ultimate Frisbee Club has attracted 30 to 40 people who have signed up for membership in the club.
“We have been thinking about starting the club a few weeks into school,” Davenport said. “We wanted to give people opportunities to have pickup games whenever they wanted.”
An aspect that separates the Ultimate Frisbee Club from other clubs is that it’s all volunteer work. There are no club dues and no cost to the players.
“Whenever you have a group of people coming together for a common cause, that are coming together because they want to be together, it is usually a beautiful thing and that is what we are trying to accomplish,” Wiles said.
The club is also open to players new to the game.
“The club will have practice days for those who need help learning the basics of Ultimate Frisbee so no one is limited or kept from trying in the game,” Wiles said. “There will be lots of options so everyone can be involved.”
The Ultimate Frisbee Club is designed in such a way that new beginners or even advanced players can still participate.
“When I got here I learned new types of throws,” Lee said. “Backhand throws and all sort of cool throws you can do.”
Davenport expressed a desire to see the club expand beyond the body at Oklahoma Christian.
“Eventually we want to get to a level where we are competing against other schools, other states and so forth,” Davenport said. “But that is a long way down the road. We have big dreams but it is just a matter of trying to get them to come true. In order to have our dreams come true, first of all we will need a bunch of good players to come through.”
The cofounders said they also have a dream to help the community. Earn Your Wings has Kite Day, where the freshmen get to fly kites with inner-city children. The Ultimate Frisbee Club is looking to do something similar.
“We would love to have some designated days like Saturdays where we have the children come so we can teach them how to throw a Frisbee as our social service or community project,” Lee said.
All Oklahoma Christian students and faculty are welcome.
“One of the best decisions I ever made was to join the old Frisbee team last year,” Lee said. “It’s a good time to go and have fun on a Friday night. It is also such a good way to meet new people. I have met so many of my younger classmen than I would have if I were not part of the Frisbee team.”
