Students shaping Honors: 2025-2026 Honors Advisory Council elected

Oklahoma Christian University announced officers for the 2025-2026 Honors Advisory Council (HAC) on April 10th. The lineup for the coming year is as follows:

  • President:  Kathryn Murphy
  • Vice-President:  Hudson Fairfield
  • Social Media/PR:  Jonah Zerpa
  • Historian/Alumni Relations:  Evangeline Golden
  • Treasurer:  Emma Head
  • Chaplain:  Sydney Byers

Kathryn Murphy, a Computer Science with Cybersecurity major elected as historian last year, will serve the community as HAC president and hopes to put her experience to use in stabilizing the Honors program however she can.

“I am most excited to really just take everything I’ve gotten from many people I’ve talked to,” she said, “and plan things they want to go to—try to shape honors a little bit because with all the director changes, honors has not been consistent for the past like three years.”

Murphy wants to create opportunities for spiritual growth and community among Honors students.

“I want to create some sort of Honors focused chapel,” Murphy said. “You know how View 63 is Mondays every month? I want something like that—to have a very honors-directed class. We have a speaker, we do a little bit of singing, and the speaker really gets you thinking—makes you want to talk about it.”

HAC’s chaplain, Sydney Byers, will serve another term as chaplain. Byers studies Family Science and Vocational Ministry and has participated in the council every year she has spent at Oklahoma Christian.

“I ran for chaplain because I wanted to do something where I could be actively involved with all Honors students and to make myself available to be a blessing to those around me,” Byers said.

Byers is excited for plans to come, but wishes to keep the specifics a mystery for now.

“Kathryn and I are working on some big plans for this upcoming school year,” Byers said, “Including some outside speakers, campus wide devos, and more. I don’t want to give away too much- we have some surprises up our sleeves!”

Byers’ experience with HAC shaped the way she views her fellow students for the better and connected her with the community.

“I think I have grown to value each individual person more and more,” she said. “Each student is not just a face in a classroom but has their own life, love, and testimony. I am hoping to be able to minister to everyone myself and with the speakers I am choosing for this upcoming year.”

Last year’s Freshman Representative, Hudson Fairfield, is returning as HAC’s Vice President. He looks forward to taking on more responsibility now that he has a better grasp on how things work.

“I’ll be taking more,” Fairfield said. “Last semester, I was really just there to get the freshman input. This semester, I’ll be taking more steps to initiate things and actually plan them out.”

Fairfield seeks to create a uniting space where students of all levels (Freshman-Senior) can socialize and connect with each other.

“Davisson is great for the sophomores and the freshmen to bond,” he said, “but other than that I really want to make sure there is an all grade—all level—sort of bonding.”

Fairfield commissions Honors students to attend events even if they are not particularly interested, as he believes they will not regret it.

“We haven’t had that much attendance in previous years,” Fairfield said. “We’re trying to really bring back the oomph. Kathryn and I are super excited to make events that are actually going to be fun. Obviously, its honors so it’ll be sort of nerdy, but the fun kind of nerdy. I encourage [the students] to actually come. [The events] are super fun.”
