The Eagles golf team continued to struggle in the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate Tournament, making a surge the second day to solidify 14th place.

The first day set the tone for the two-day competition, as the Eagles shot a team score of 303 and were tied for 20th out of the 24-team field. They were 21 shots behind the leader, Western New Mexico.

Zac Schaefer led the team on the first day, shooting a one-over 72 — placing him tied for 20th and five shots behind the two leaders. Sam Johnston posted a first-day 75, tying for 60th.

Men’s Golf Head Coach David Lynn said he was disappointed with the way the team played the first day, and was hoping the team would play better the next day. “We played extremely poorly the first day,” Lynn said. “Pretty much everything went wrong that could.”

The second day seemed to improve for the Eagles, surging up the team leaderboard to finish at 14th. Three of Oklahoma Christian University’s golfers shot even par or better, shooting a team score of 284 – 19 strokes better than the first day.

Schaefer continued to lead the Eagles, shooting a bogey-free, final round two-under 69. This put him at one-under par for the three rounds played and tied for seventh among the 120-man field.

Johnston posted a second-day 71 and finished tied for 36th. Chris Karlovich shot a final-day 71, 10 strokes better than his first round score and jumped up to finish tied for 83rd.

Lynn said he was pleased with the way his team responded the second day and was proud of the way they fought. “Tuesday we played much better,” Lynn said. “Everyone improved at least three shots. … We are still learning and I am experimenting with the line up as we have eight new players. I feel we will get better each week. I’m proud of the heart we showed today.”

Oklahoma Christian is off until Oct. 12-13, when they travel to Overland Park, Kansas to play in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Bill Ross Intercollegiate.
