Anna Arrese Cortadellas won another tournament individually, and the Lady Eagles placed again as a team at the Diffie Ford-Lincoln Invitational at the Kickingbird Golf Course on March 9-10.

The Lady Eagles sat in third place after the first round of the two-day tournament with a team score of 306.

Sophomore Dana Todd said the conditions lately made practice difficult, but she and her team have found time to keep their feel for the course.

“We have just been trying to get out as much as we can because the weather hasn’t been great but we have all been practicing hard since January,” Todd said. “For these next few days, we pretty much just want to get out there as much as we can and get a good feel again after these snow days.”

After the first day, the Lady Eagles were ready to make a run at back-to-back team wins. Cortadellas and Audrey Meisch were both tied for third after both posting scores of 75 for the opening round.

The Lady Eagles were confident coming into this tournament because of their experience on the course, Todd said.

“I think it will be an advantage,” Todd said. “It’s a familiar course close to the school, which is nice. But we still have to make sure to focus and not slack off just because we know the course. It will be just an important as if we were playing a course we have never played before.”

Cortadellas highlighted the second day as she posted a 68, two under par, to earn the tournament crown individually for the second straight tournament.

Women’s Golf Head Coach Greg Lynn said he was very proud of his team, especially Cortadellas.

“I’m very proud of the girls,” Lynn said. “Anna is playing fantastic and just keeps getting better and better. It’s fun to watch her play. All the girls played well.”

Cortadellas’ 68 consisted of three birdies and one bogey — sealing a four-shot margin between her and the first-place score. Her score is a career-best – the first score under 70.

Lynn said Cortadellas had a good chance to win just about every tournament she is placed in.

“I’m telling you, when she tees it up in a tournament, she’s the best player in the tournament,” Lynn said of Cortadellas. “In order to win, you have to have a decent putting day and today she did.”

Cortadellas’ teammate Meisch shot a second-round 74 to place her tied for fourth. These two helped the Lady Eagles to a second-place finish as a team.

Lynn said he is very excited about his team and the way they are playing right now.

“We are a good team,” Lynn said. “That’s why we’re beating good teams. The girls are playing well. They have come together as a team. They work hard on their games all week long, as they do their studies. I just couldn’t tell you how proud I am of them and we’re having a good time.”

The Lady Eagles will have quick turnaround as they travel next week to the Augustana Spring Fling on March 19-20 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California.
