Eagle baseball splits doubleheader at SOSU

After losing in extra innings to Northeastern State University on Saturday, the Oklahoma Christian University men’s baseball team split a doubleheader at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Junior Ben McKenzie, who played his first game as an Eagle on Saturday, said the team failed to score consistently throughout Saturday – something they needed to address he said.

“Once we get ahead, we need to stay ahead and keep scoring runs the rest of the game, McKenzie said.

Oklahoma Christian appeared to have solved its offensive issue, at least temporarily. In the first game against SOSU, the Eagles routed the Savage Storm 16-3, with runs scored in every inning but the first.

Kolton Brown scored first for Oklahoma Christian with a solo homerun in the second inning. Kyle Lacy followed in the third inning with a 2-run homer to right center that sent Cody Rosecrans across the plate before him.

SOSU scored once in the third off a sacrifice fly from the bat of Kaleb Thomas that sent Brayon Colley home.

The Eagles scored five runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, with a single run scored in the fifth from a sacrifice fly from Rosecrans that allowed Caden Cleveland to score. In the seventh inning, Peck singled to right to send Kuwitzky over the plate. Peck crossed home later in the seventh inning.

The Savage Storm scored twice more in the sixth inning, but trailed by 11.

McKenzie said the team is a competitive force because it maintains its composure in any circumstance.

“We have a really close team and we stay pretty relaxed no matter what the situation is,” McKenzie said.

SOSU’s offense picked up in the second game of the doubleheader, while a dry spell for Oklahoma Christian through the fourth, fifth and sixth inning sealed their fate.

Cody Coats stole home to score first for the Savage Storm, the only run of the first inning.

Brown answered for the Eagles in the second with an RBI that sent McKenzie home. Derek Jones tripled to left center to advance Jordan Lopez home, and later crossed the plate himself after McKenzie homered to right field, putting the score at 4-1 Oklahoma Christian after the third inning.

The Savage Storm’s bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth, sending nine runners home after the Eagles failed to score. Oklahoma Christian did not score in the fifth or sixth inning either, while SOSU earned another run in the bottom of the fifth.

Zac Cobble scored off a double by Lopez, but the Eagles’ hopes for a comeback were squelched. SOSU took game two with an 11-5 win.

Oklahoma Christian hosts West Texas A&M in the home opener on Feb. 13 at 1 p.m., followed by a second game against West Texas A&M and the first of three games against Dakota State University on Saturday. The Eagles will play Dakota State again on Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 11 a.m.
