Eagles 4×400 sets school record, again

The Oklahoma Christian University men’s track 4×400 relay broke the school record a second time this season at Pittsburg State University on Saturday afternoon.

“There were numerous season bests and all-time bests and overall we competed well against some good schools,” Track and Field Head Coach Wade Miller said. “We were able to better our NCAA provisional qualifier mark in the men’s 4×400-meter relay and are now ranked 11th in the NCAA DII in that event.”

The 4×400 relay team – Sawyer Pehkonen, Landon Huslig, Ryan Lutterloh and Joshua Jones – broke the 50-year record with its time of 3:15.74 on Jan. 29 and broke its own record with their new time of 3:14.54 on Saturday.

The relay team will now compete in the 4×400 at the Division II Indoor Championships, which is at Pittsburg State on March 11-12.

On the first day, both Bryant Kierns and Eli Sherrill posted personal bests in their respective events.

First, Kierns placed 13th in the 5,000-meter with his new career-best time of 15:12.08. Sherrill won his heat in the 200-meter and ran his personal-best time of 22.55 seconds. He also finished first among Oklahoma Christian runners in the 60-meter with his time of 7.18 seconds.

Evan McQuirk and Jake Weith ran in the 5,000-meter alongside Kierns and placed 18th and 27th, respectively. McQuirk finished in 15:31.25 and Weith crossed the line at 15:57.19.

Austin Wallace ran the 60-meter hurdles and posted a time of 8.90 seconds, fast enough to place him 14th in the race.

On the second day, Oklahoma Christian finished fourth among the 39 teams competing. Besides the record-setting 4×400 relay team, there were many other personal and season-best times.

Sisay Gillock ran his best time in the 3,000-meter with a time of 8:48.61, fast enough for seventh. Emory Lobley placed fifth in the 800-meter with his personal-best time of 1:55.73 and was first among DII competitors.

Roberto Diaz finished eighth in the 3,000-meter with his personal-best time of 8:28.19 and Kyle Broaddrick was right behind him, finishing 10th with his personal-best time of 8:34.44.

Pehkonen was the top DII finisher in the 400-meter with his time of 48.90 seconds, which placed him third in the race. Huslig also ran in the 60-meter hurdles and posted a time of 8.51, placing him 13th.
