Eagles’ Schaefer finishes 20th among Division I schools

Zach Schaefer and Ethan Smith led the men’s golf team to an 11th place finish among NCAA Division I schools at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Bill Ross Intercollegiate tournament.

Men’s Golf Head Coach, David Lynn said he was excited for his men to take part in a tough tournament like this one on Monday and Tuesday. “We were excited for this week’s UMKC Bill Ross Intercollegiate.  It was a great opportunity for us to play against some schools we never see because the field was 12 NCAA DI schools and us.” Lynn said.

Oklahoma Christian University was the only NCAA Division II team among a full lineup of top-line Division I teams. Sam Johnston was the leader the first day. Johnston shot a first-round 78, but recovered quickly with a second-round, one-over 73. This put Johnston 13 strokes back of the leader after the first day.

Schaefer and Smith led the second day, as Schaefer shot an even-par 72 to place him tied for 20th for the tournament. Smith posted a two-over 74, finishing tied for 61st. Johnston shot a third and final round 75 to place him tied for 29th.

The Eagles’ team score of 298 was the fourth best final round score, aiding the team’s total score of 911. This score was low enough to place Oklahoma Christian at 11th, 17 shots ahead of Creighton University.

Lynn said he had specific aspects of the game he was trying to get his players to sharpen up. “We have really been working on our short game by chipping and putting a lot,” Lynn said. “I expect us to get better each week as we garner new opportunities for experience.”

The Eagles play next Monday and Tuesday at the Midwestern State Invitational and close out the fall schedule on Oct. 26-27 at the Southern Plains Intercollegiate.
