The Oklahoma Christian University Track and Field teams set new personal bests and placed in numerous events at the Cowley Tiger Decathlon on April 10.

“We are just spread out everywhere, and we got our multi-event people doing well yesterday and today, so they have done well,” Head Coach of Men and Women’s Track and Field Randy Heath said last Thursday. “Our distance runners will be at Wichita State Friday night, and they have got a very good performance. The wind will be down and that will be better for them. Saturday Pittsburg State will be good for fill-in events. … It will be a good week. It’s a lot of different options, lots of opportunities.”

Sophomore Austin Wallace set a new personal best by taking first out of 10 competitors, while senior Roz Hamilton took third place out of 17 competitors on April 10 at the Cowley Tiger Decathlon

Wallace took second in the men’s 100-meter with a final time of 10.98 seconds. He went on to earn first place in the 400-meter. Wallace threw 28.08 meters and 50.05 meters in the discus and javelin respectively. His efforts earned third place and second place in high jump and long jump. He took third place in the pole vault and 110-meter hurdles. Finally, he finished the 1,500-meter overall in 5:02.88 and threw 12.13 meters in the shot put.

“I felt like it was pretty good and the weather was just about right,” Wallace said. “Sometimes it was a little too windy, but overall it was good. I am satisfied with many of my events, but I also did not do as good as I normally would in a few events, and not with my discus and hurdles. I need more work in both. However, I had some good personal bests.”

Though Wallace scored well in this meet, he did not compete without challenges.

“The hardest part of the meet was dealing with all of the wind, and also the mile run because it is very long and hard,” Austin said. “Through this meet, I learned that people can’t get down when things don’t go your way because if you have the right mindset you can do better in the other events.”

Hamilton, who has been training for the women’s heptathlon for weeks, broke a 27-year-old school record last Thursday.

“I thought it went well,” Hamilton said. “Overall I’m satisfied with my performance. A few of the events I wish would have gone better – I want to run my hurdles a little faster, and I did not throw as well as I wanted to in the javelin throw.”

Hamilton took first place in both the shot put and the 800-meter. She came in sixth place in the 200-meter with a final time of 26.54. Hamilton earned 10th place in the 100-meter hurdle with a final time of 16.43. Hamilton jumped 1.62 meters and 5.22 meters in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Finally she threw 26.43 meters in the javelin and finished in sixth place.

“The hardest event for me is probably javelin,” Hamilton said. “It is very technical, it is all about form and I am having a little bit of trouble getting form now. I need to keep working hard and keep getting a little bit better.”

At the K.T. Woodman Classic last Friday, senior Brayden Barrientez took 14th out of 93 competitors with a final time of 4:01.50 in the 1,500-meter. Freshman Maci Rich also came in 14th place out of 82 competitors, posting a final time of a 4:55.35 in the 1,500-meter. Freshman Katie Jones earned 24th with a final time of 19:57.13 in the 5,000-meter. Sophomore Timothy Zuercher finished in the 10,000-meter with a final time of 33:18.24.

“Travel and getting places is a hard part for this week, not so much for practice, but because there are competitions going during the middle of the week and end of the week both,” Heath said. “Next week it will be even less because we will be spread out again, so there is more mid-week type competitions in the next week. Practices once you get down to the end of the season are not as intense. They are shorter or lighter and the emphasis is on the meets.”

On Saturday at the David Suneram Gorilla Classic junior Makenzie Brown took 11th place out of 21 competitors with a final distance of 40.86 meters in the discus throw. Senior Larry Brown came in second place with 54.6 meters in the hammer throw. Brown posted a season-best mark in the discus throw. Freshman Miranda Ostlund earned fourth place out of 18 competitors with 37.56 meters in the javelin throw. For the relay teams, the men’s 4×100 meter relay took fifth place with a final time of 43.81 seconds, and 4×400 relay came in ninth place with a final time of 3:26.88. The Lady Eagles earned third place in the 4×400 relay.

Oklahoma Christian began the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. Wednesday, and finish the meet tomorrow.
