Hammer sets records; Eagles post personal bests

For the third time this season, graduate student Layne Hammer broke the Oklahoma Christian University indoor 5,000-meter record at the Pittsburgh State Invitational Jan. 27.

Hammer posted the second-best time at 16:59.48 in the 51-woman event, breaking her previous record of 17:03.27 that she set a day prior. Hammer is the first Oklahoma Christian runner to get below the 17-minute mark in the indoor 5,000-meter and her time ranks ninth among NCAA Division II runners in the indoor season.

Junior Alexus Woolly took 22nd out of 63 competitors in the weight throw with 14.99 meters, followed by junior Maia Zeno in 26th at 14.01 and sophomore Destiny Grace at 28th with 13.41.

Grace also placed 12th in the shot put, throwing 12.94 meters.

Graduate student McKenzie Stanford posted a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles, placing 28th out of 56 hurdlers at 9.38 seconds.

Sophomore Michaiah Chock finished the 600-yard run with a personal best time of 1:27.48 and took seventh place in the 42-runner event and sophomore Kelsey Simmons finished second runners in the 800-meter, posting a personal best time of 2:21.21.

After her record-setting performance, Hammer was named Eagle of the Week, becoming the first member of the women’s track and field team to receive the award.

For the men’s team, senior Landon Huslig broke his own personal record in the 60-meter hurdles twice at the invitational Jan. 27.

Huslig posted a preliminary time of 8.15 seconds before finishing even faster in the finals at 8.09 seconds to place fifth.

The 4×400 relay team, Huslig, freshman Ian Colbert, senior Sawyer Pehkonen and freshman Andre Norman, placed second among 38 teams with a time of 3:14.20. This finish ranks seventh on the year in the NCAA Division II.

“Our mindset is always to get better,” Huslig said. “We have been able to run with the best teams, but are always looking to get better and to do that we need to compete with the best teams.”

A second 4×400 relay team of freshman Javier Hernandez, senior Austin Kruzich, freshman Brady Aderholt and sophomore Riley McKnight placed 13th in 3:23.72.

Norman finished ninth in the 63-man 60-yard dash, tying his personal best time at 6.92 seconds.

McKnight placed 10th in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:14.12, and Hernandez took 14th at 1:14.92.

Junior Evan McQuirk finished 13th out of 60 runners in the 3,000-meter at 8:44.27 and sophomore Kelton Reynolds placed 14th in the 66-man one mile run with a personal best of 4:24.92.

“The season has started off well,” Huslig said. “We definitely need to keep improving as the other teams also get better. The goal for this next meet is to lower our times even further so we can secure a spot in nationals.”

As the track indoor season continues, both teams will travel to Joplin, MO to compete in the Lion Open and Multi hosted by Missouri Southern State University Feb. 2 and 3.
