Intramural Male Athlete of the Week

Name: Caysan Lytal

Club: Chi Lambda Phi

Year: Senior

Hometown: Canyon, TX

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Sport: Softball A Team

Stats:

Thursday, September 19, 2019:Chi Lambda Phi entered softball playoffs undefeated as the first seed. They beat Delta Gamma Sigma Tuesday, Sept. 17. They then played Kappa Sigma Tau Sept. 19 in the championship game. The game was close the entire time. After seven innings, Chi and Kappa were tied and entered extra innings. Lytal hit a walk-off in-park homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game for Chi. Lytal talks about what led to the extra inning win:

“In the last inning with two outs, senior Brendan King hit a two-out line drive that was almost caught but ended up falling out of the fielder’s glove. He never gave up on it and ran the play out and dove into first, extending the inning and made extras possible. Being down by three at the time, it would’ve been easy to give up and no one would have blamed him, but his effort made winning possible. Following that, seniors Jackson Phillips and Peyton Allen both had base hits with two outs that ended up tying the game and sending the game into extras. Softball will always be dependent on a team, and the entire team fought close to the end of the game.”

Q: What do you enjoy about playing intramurals?

A:“Playing intramurals wouldn’t be nearly as fun without playing with some of my best friends on campus that I’ve found in Chi. Knowing that I’ll be closer to those guys no matter what happens on the field makes playing a lot more fun.”

Q: Why do love softball?

A: “Softball and baseball are the only two sports that you can’t simply run out the clock. To win, you have to prove that you deserve to win from the first pitch to the last out of the game. This brings a level of competition and requires a level of grit that I feel is unrivaled in any other sport. I’ve always had a love for the sport for this reason. I also miss baseball very much, so softball is the next best alternative for me.”
