Intramural Update: Winless team sneaks into playoffs while Delta and Chi grapple

Intense games have been played since the last update, and the regular season feels like it was ages ago. With two thirds of the semifinal games completed, the stage is set for the women’s league and men’s B league finals.

After achieving their first win over Alpha to end the regular season, the freshmen B team came out hot against Delta. The game was a defensive showdown, ending in overtime with Delta winning 22-16. The following semifinal was also closer than its regular season counterpart, with Kappa’s offense doing its best to stick with Chi. The defensive pressure was simply too much however, and the near perfect offense triumphed, as Chi won 30-18.

In the first women’s semifinal, Theta remained so far ahead of the freshmen their coach, Luke Ferguson, took the field to help them score any “points.” The win sets Theta into the final, where their  packed arsenal of offensive and defensive firepower plan to win it all.

The other women’s semifinal was a showdown between Lambda and Gamma. Despite a strong effort from Lambda’s defense, Gamma was simply too strong an offense, and the pass rush stayed in quarterback Olivia Hampton’s face all night. Gamma will play Theta at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The men’s A league has a full round of semifinal games yet to be played. The regular season featured many exciting matchups, including every referee’s least favorite matchup, Delta vs Chi A. After name-calling, elbow throwing and one player on each team being held off the field for a handful of snaps, Delta prevailed and earned themselves the one seed going into the playoffs. However, it will not be a smooth road for Delta, as they dropped a close game to Kappa despite Ferguson running two kickoffs back for touchdowns. Luckily, Delta will have the chance to redeem themselves when they confront Kappa again in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, the Freshmen face Chi in a game where they enter as the favorites. The freshmen won two big games by keeping close and pulling ahead at the end, first against Kappa and second against Chi. The defensive efforts of Gabe Dittmeyer make this freshmen team one to watch this year.

Looking ahead, Oct. 14 is the Glow Run, an event which will double as the cross country intramural. The football intramural season will not resume until after fall break.

Intramural Athletes of the Week

Women’s Intramural Athlete of the Week: Raygan Sinclair (Gamma Rho)

Most times, a defending team only has one player to prevent scoring. Sinclair had to cover three linemen from Lambda and handled it with ease. Sinclair appeared every time Lambda looked for a check down pass, and her game winning interception sealed the deal. Sinclair will have a tough task ahead of her against Theta’s offense, but she has shown she can compete at a high level.

First Runner Up: Marissa Powell (Lambda Chi Zeta)

There are times in a game where you need someone to step up and take charge for their team. Powell found herself in that moment and took control, winning multiple contested catches and putting Lambda on the scoreboard. Powell should leave this season with her head held high, as it will be exciting to see what she can do next year should she still be around.

Morgan Berres (Theta Theta Theta)

Berres is an excellent all-around player for Theta. From running kick returns back, finding running lanes, throwing for touchdowns, or acting as a stallworth defender, if Gamma wants revenge from their regular season loss, they will have to stop Morgan Berres.

Men’s Intramural Athlete of the Week: Tristan Copeland (Delta Gamma Sigma)

Acting as Delta’s threat on their B team, Copeland’s ability to stretch out a defense rivals only the top receivers in the league. Copeland’s ability to win in contested spaces and agility to out run a defense are two incredible skill sets that are complimented with one of the toughest mind sets on kickoffs, hustling down on the kick and pinning teams deep in their own territory. Copeland will be someone Chi has to contain if they want to win the B league championship.

First Runner Up: Buddy Lambert (Kappa Sigma Tau)

Buddy Lambert is simply put, the most agile quarterback in the league this year. His ability to escape the pocket and either find the gap in opposing defenses or keep the ball to himself make him one of the deadliest weapons an offense can have. From going through his reads calmly and carefully, to finding the best option to beat a defense, Lambert is ready to take the league this year.

Second Runner Up: Jeremiah Lorance (Chi Lambda Phi)

A two-way player for Chi B, Lorance combines speed, agility, and awareness at a scary level. His heads up playmaking ability allows him to read where quarterbacks want to throw and knock the ball down. And his hands alongside his quickness make him a tough receiver to guard. Lorance will be a name that Delta has to contain if they want to win the B league, a task that is significantly easier said than done.
