The Lady Eagles track and field team found success at the Southwestern Invitational in Winfield, Kansas, as McKenzie Stanford and Katie Ostlund won their events.

Paradise Henson also placed a national-qualifying time.

Stanford is a few days off from being named NCCAA central region basketball player of the year. She went from the court to the track.

“It was pretty difficult, because it was literally within about a week or two from getting off our last game,” Stanford said. “But I’m so used to that change over because of my high school days.”

This was the first outdoor meet of the season. Oklahoma Christian University qualified eight individuals and one relay team, a total of 13 events. As a team, the Lady Eagles placed fifth with 71 points.

Stanford, who is coming into the meet with just three days of practice, won the high jump with a top mark of 5 feet 6 inches. Stanford also placed seventh in the shot put with a top mark of 37 feet.

Katie Ostlund posted a career-best mark in the javelin, which she won. Ostlund launched the javelin 142 feet, eight and 1/2 inches. Ostlund’s sister Miranda also placed in this event, taking fourth with a mark of 123 feet six and 1/4 inches. Miranda placed third in the hammer throw with a top posting of 133 feet and 11 inches.

Basketball teammate of Stanford’s, Makenzie Brown also competed for the track team, placing third in the discus with a throw of 129 feet 4 3/4 inches.

Henson posted national qualifying times in the 100-meters and the 200-meters, placing fifth in the 100 and eighth in the 200. Henson’s sprinting teammate Rebecca Bloodworth posted a career-best in the 400-meters with a time of 1:01.25, placing her at eighth.

The distance runners for the Lady Eagles qualified in the relays and individuals both. Maegan Cowan competed in the 800 meter and placed sixth with a qualifying time of 2:25.49. Cowan and Bloodworth were also apart of the national-qualifying relay as the 4×400 team of those two and Kara Drewke and Wilmina Gley took fifth with a time of 4:09.81

Drewke also qualified nationally in the 400-meter hurdles, placing sixth among 17 runners in a career-best 1:08.92.

Maci Rich was the most successful, taking second in the 1500-meters and qualifying for the outdoor national meet with her time of 4:53.78.

Track and Field Head Coach Randy Heath said he was very pleased with his team’s day, especially those coming in from other sports.

“I thought the newcomers, mostly from the basketball team came in and made there mark early,” Heath said. “I am excited for the rest of the outdoor season.”

The Lady Eagles will be off until March 28 when they compete in the Oklahoma Baptist Bison Invitational in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
