The Oklahoma Christian University men’s golf team posted a sixth-place finish at the Midwestern State Invitational, led by Zac Schaefer’s second top-10 finish of the fall season.
A memorable second-round was the key for the Eagles to stay in contention after the first day. The first round did not go as planned as the Eagles were ahead of three teams, following the team’s first-round score of 318. But an improved second round from a couple of players led the team to a score of 289.
Leading this second round was Schaefer and Alejandro Valenzuela. Schaefer posted a 69 – the lowest individual score of the whole tournament. Valenzuela rebounded nine-shots as well and posted a second-round 73.
To start the final day, the Eagles were four shots off the lead, but posted a team score of 318 to drop the men to sixth among the 18-team field. But among Heartland Conference teams, the Eagles were second.
The second day did not go as smoothly for the Eagles. Schaefer posted a 77 and dropped to finish tied for eighth. Valenzuela finished tied for 54th after a final-round 80 to put his two-day score at 235.
Two Eagles finished tied for 42nd – freshmen Casey Rebmann and Juan Pallach, who both posted tournament scores of 233.
The Oklahoma Christian men will close up the fall golf season next Monday and Tuesday at Gaillardia Country Club, taking part in the Southern Plains Intercollegiate.
