Eagle golfer Sam Johnston and the Oklahoma Christian University men’s golf team placed second at the Desert Golf Classic earlier this week at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Club.
The Eagles and Johnston were in the lead after opening day of the two-day tournament.
Johnston shot a 72 the first day, tying him for first. Kevin Workman and Trey Payne placed in the top 10, aiding the Eagles to the 292-team score. Workman posted a 71, only one shot behind the leaders and Payne was two behind Workman, tied for eighth after a 73, one over par.
Both Johnston and the team dropped to second place during the final day of the tournament.
Oklahoma Christian came into the second day at the top of the rankings, but couldn’t recover after posting two triple-bogeys in the first five holes as a team. The Eagles posted a score of 300 on the day and 592 for the tournament, just two shots behind the winner.
Johnston missed an individual title as he was co-leader going into the second day, but shot a 74, finishing the tournament at an even-par 144.
Men’s Golf Head Coach David Lynn said he was pleased with his team’s progress this week.
“We came in as one of the lower Division II teams and we beat a few top-25 teams,” Lynn said. “And I’m really pleased with that and pleased with the way we competed, nevertheless a little disappointed we let one slip away.”
Lynn said the mistakes in the early holes of the second day proved to be a hurdle for the Eagles.
“We counted two doubles and two triples today in our four best scores,” Lynn said. “It’s difficult to overcome that.”
Oklahoma Christian’s next tournament is the St. Mary’s Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on March 16-17.
