The Oklahoma Christian University baseball team split a double-header with Newman University on Friday and Saturday.

The Eagles secured a 14-11 win in the second game of the series, after falling 2-7 in the opener.

According to Assistant Coach Andrew McGuire, the Eagles’ mindset of leadership helped them earn the win.

“Our mentality is always to win the series,” McGuire said. “After dropping game one, we had to scramble to win game two to give us a chance to win the series. Players [are] stepping up in the absence of the others and have been a big part in our success.”

In the first game, the Eagles took an early lead in the first two innings when Derek Jones singled, sending Zac Cobble home and Ben McKenzie grounded out to second base allowing Kyle Lacy to score.

Newman sent four runners home in the bottom of the third and took the lead over the Eagles. It maintained the lead and added runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win against Oklahoma Christian.

Dillon Endecott was the starting pitcher in the opener, adding two strikeouts to the board, while Dylon Sturges also added two as relief pitcher. Closer Eddie Broll added another strikeout for the Eagles.

Austin Orth reached a career-high five RBIs to help Oklahoma Christian soar past Newman in the second game. Kolton Brown had four hits, Josh Garbrecht contributed three and Lacy and Chase Kuwitzky each added two.

Kelby Reneau recorded the win with three strikeouts, while Garret Hill contributed two strikeouts and Lacy got the save with two as well.

According to McKenzie, the pitching was powerful in both games.

“We have strong pitching in our starters Dillon Endecott and Kelby Reneau and a key bat in Derek Jones who hits in the 3-hole and has been hot at the plate lately,” McKenzie said. “We need to continue to improve on scoring runs when we get our chances.”

McGuire said if the Eagles can limit their mistakes they will win more.

The Eagles will face Oklahoma City University at home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
