The weekend proved challenging for Oklahoma Christian University’s baseball team as it battled weather and the University of Texas Permian Basin in a three-game series.

The Eagles lost both games on Friday as they battled 28 mph winds and dropped their third game on Saturday. The Eagles were one run behind the Falcons in each game.

Pitcher Brennan Walker said the team simply had a rough day on the field.

“The conditions were tough,” Walker said. “The wind was blowing in pretty hard and we saw some good pitchers. It just seemed like one of those days where nothing we hit fell.”

The first of Friday’s doubleheader resulted in a low-scoring victory for the Falcons. Oklahoma Christian scored the first run in the fifth inning when Jackson Matthews’ single sent Kyle Lacy home. The Falcons hit a streak and sent three home in the sixth inning. The Eagles attempted a comeback with Derek Jones scoring in the bottom of the seventh, but the Falcons took the game 3-2.

The second game was equally as challenging for the Eagles as winds stayed at 22 mph.

After six empty innings, Austin Orth scored the sole run for the Eagles on Josh Garbrecht’s single in the seventh inning. The Falcons scored two runs in the eighth inning and ended the game 2-1, sweeping the doubleheader.

Walker said he had confidence before going into the third game and believed the team could make up for the first day’s loss.

“I think we didn’t capitalize on some big opportunities, whether it was to score runs or not give up runs,” Walker said. “Even though we lost, we were in and had chances to win both games so we should be able to get the job done tomorrow.”

Walker and the Eagles came back to third game and took advantage of the milder weather, but they couldn’t make up for the Falcons’ offense at the plate.

Brady Baugh recorded the Eagles’ first run in the second inning on Garbrecht’s single into right field. In the next inning, Matthews knocked a homerun above left field to send himself and Jones home, bringing the score up 3-0.

University of Texas Permian Basin rallied together for another streak and recorded four back-to-back runs in the fourth inning.

Jones hit the team’s second homerun of the day in the fifth inning, the Eagles trailed 5-4. The Falcons and the Eagles both sent two home in the sixth inning to wrap up the game 7-6 in the Falcons favor.
