Landon Huslig, who posted both season-best and national-qualifying times in three events, and five mile runners qualified for the national competition at the Central Oklahoma Indoor Invitational in Norman.
Huslig placed third in the 60-meter hurdle on Saturday, with a time of 8.53 seconds and finished fourth in the 200-meter, posting a time of 23.27 seconds. Both times met the national-qualifying standard. Huslig also ran in the 4X400-meter relay team, running the lead-off leg.
Huslig ran alongside teammates Kentrell Miller, Joshua Jones and Thomas Ducat, placing third with a time of 3:24.80, the second-best time in the NCCAA this season.
Ducat, a senior, said he was focused on specific details of his running.
“For me personally, I was really looking to turn it up on the second turn in the 200,” Ducat said. “And as a team we were looking for [personal records] and another season-high in the 4×4.”
Ducat said the team’s times were due to favorable training conditions in the week leading up to the meet.
“The weather allowed us to put in some good work this week, and I think we were more prepared for this meet than the previous meets,” Ducat said.
Ducat said his teammates were focusing on certain aspects of their running this past week, and they achieved those goals.
“Jamal has been focusing on his 200, Landon was looking to place high in the hurdles, Josh has been focused on posting another fast split in the 4×4 and getting a good mark for the 200,” Ducat said. “Kenny was hoping to come out strong in the 200 and continue to shave time off his 4×4 split, and we all did that for the most part.”
Track and Field Head Coach Randy Heath said Oklahoma Christian had a great showing in the mile. Five of the Eagle runners placed in the top 10 in the mile and each runner posted national-qualifying times for the Indoor National Meet.
Four of the runners, Brennym Kaelin at 4:22.28, Roberto Diaz at 4:23.44, Kyle Broaddrick at 4:24.72 and Sisay Gillock at 4:25.26, placed third through sixth, consecutively. Emory Lobley placed ninth with a 4:30.29.
Ryan Lutterloh also posted a national-qualifying time in the 800-meter with a 1:59.90.
Heath said he was very pleased with his men’s team at this meet.
“We had very good performances from our milers, sprinters and hurdlers, and they deserve it as they have been working on their races intensely all week,” Heath said.
The Eagles’ next meet is the Lion Invitational in Joplin, Missouri on Feb. 6-7.
