Super Bowl LVI
The 2022 Super Bowl matchup is set. The Cincinnati Bengals will take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, Feb. 13.
The Bengals, led by second year quarterback Joe Burrow, beat the Kansas City Chiefs with a game-winning field goal by Evan McPherson. After not winning a playoff game for over 30 years, the Bengals have a chance to bring home their first title in franchise history.
The Rams completed a 4th-quarter comeback against the San Francisco 49ers to earn the right to advance to their second Super Bowl since 2019. Quarterback Matt Stafford will be playing in his first Super Bowl after getting his first career playoff win just weeks ago.
Tom Brady retirement
Tom Brady has officially retired from the NFL. The seven-time Super Bowl champion, five-time Super Bowl MVP, three-time All-Pro, and 15-time Pro Bowl player has called it a career after 22 years. Brady announced his retirement via his social media platforms and a lengthy letter.
“I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention,” Brady said. “I will remember and cherish these memories and revisit them often. I feel like the luckiest person in the world.”
2022 Pro-Bowl
The 2022 Pro Bowl is on Feb. 6; rosters for both the NFC and AFC are official. The complete rosters are posted on the NFL’s website.
The Indianapolis Colts are sending a league-leading seven players to the Pro Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are all sending at least five.
MLB lockout update
On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the owners and players held a face-to-face meeting to discuss the new collective bargaining agreement. The talks reportedly did not go as planned as the two sides are still in disagreement.
After the Feb. 1 meetings, MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on his Twitter account that little progress was made and spring training will likely start late.
“The on-time opening of spring training at this point is in grave danger, and frankly, would take a miraculous deal coming together to rescue,” Passan said. “A delay feels inevitable.”
There is no set date currently for the next meeting between the two sides.
NBA trade deadline and update
The NBA trade deadline is on Feb. 10 at 3 p.m., and rumors of moves are swirling around the league.
The Philadelphia 76ers are rumored to make a move as all-star point guard Ben Simmons remains away from the team in the wake of offseason drama. Simmons began to feud with the 76ers front office along with other players following reports of him showing up late and giving poor effort. The team suspended Simmons at the beginning of the season and he has not made an appearance since. Several teams around the league are interested in acquiring Simmons.
The Los Angeles Lakers are also rumored to make moves at the deadline. Team front office and players are upset with the 25-27 record the team currently holds along with being ninth in the Western Conference. The Lakers are currently involved in talks with multiple teams about adding to their roster to improve during the second half of the season.
The latest NBA power rankings hold the same top three: the Phoenix Suns, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors. The Miami Heat moved from No. 6 into the top 5, and the Denver Nuggets moved from No. 13 to No. 7.
College basketball update
In college basketball rankings, Kansas dropped from No. 5 to No. 10 after losing to Kentucky. Texas made a top 25 appearance for the first time since the pre-season rankings at No. 23. Auburn currently remains the No. 1 team.Full rankings can be found here.
