The last week in sports has been a hectic one. For the first time in history, all four major sports are being played at one time: the NHL, MLB, NFL and NBA were all in action last week. For sports fans who did not know what to watch, here is what you may have missed.
The Major League Baseball playoff bracket is officially set and ready to start up with a brand-new format on Tuesday, Sept. 29. with the American League wild-card games. This is the first year of the MLB’s new innovative playoff format. They are allowing 16 teams a bid to the postseason, the most out of all major sports, with the top two teams from each division making it in automatically. The nature of the shortened season and expansion of the playoffs have allowed some surprises to creep into the 2020 postseason. The Miami Marlins, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds all clinched a spot last week to extend their seasons.
The Stanley Cup finals are in full swing between the Dallas Stars and the Tampa Bay Lightning. The series is currently at 3-2 in favor of the Lightning. Saturday night saw the Stars claim a thrilling overtime victory, coming back from 3-1. The puck drops for game six on Monday, Sept. 28, at 7:00 p.m. CST.
The NBA playoffs are still chugging along with the Miami Heat coming out of nowhere and stunning the Celtics in six games to nab a spot in the NBA Finals. Unsurprisingly the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets in only five games, taking the other spot in the NBA Finals. The 2020 NBA Finals matchup will start on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 8:00 p.m. CT.
Week three of the NFL gave us a few surprises in the 3-0 club and disappointment in the dreaded 0-3. The Chicago Bears somehow found a way to win yet again, replacing Mitch Trubisky with quarterback Nick Foles in the middle of the third quarter and improving to 3-0. The Bills, Titans, Packers, Seahawks and Steelers all continued their hot start, staying undefeated in the young season. The Falcons blew yet another two-score lead in the fourth quarter and fell to 0-3 while the Vikings lost a heartbreaker to shockingly lose once again. The Giants and Jets round out the NFL’s worst while the Eagles and Bengals tied, leading both teams to still be winless in 2020.
