Windy conditions blow men’s golf back to 6th in Amarillo

The Oklahoma Christian University men’s golf team played in the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational Tournament at the Tascosa Country Club in Amarillo, Texas on Monday and Tuesday.

The Eagles placed sixth as a team, highlighted by two top-20 finishes from Alejandro Valenzuela and Zac Schaefer.

The first day of the tournament did not go as well as the players and coaches hoped, placing seventh among the 13 teams participating. Oklahoma Christian’s defending Heartland Conference Player of the Year, Sam Johnston sat out this tournament.

Men’s Golf Head Coach David Lynn said he believes the course conditions affected his young team. “Conditions were fairly difficult today,” Lynn said. “Greens were firm and fast, and the wind blew 20-30 all day. I feel we didn’t adjust well to those circumstances. We shot 307-295, which is tied for seventh. We finished the first round extremely poorly, playing our last four to five holes about 10 over as a team.”

The only two rounds that were not over-par were from Schaefer and Valenzuela, who both posted even-par 72s on their second rounds of the day. They both shot 75s in their early-morning round.

Lynn said he also believes his team can do some good things year, despite being very young. “We have four freshman, one sophomore and one senior this week, so we are a little young and inexperienced,” Lynn said. I expect we will take some lumps early but I like our team and think we will get better each week.”

The Eagles recorded lower scores on day two, but did not move much higher on the leaderboard, finishing sixth after both days’ scores were compiled together.

Valenzuela posted a 75 and Schaefer shot 76 in their final rounds of the tournament. Ryan Trousdale highlighted the final day with a 71, the Eagles’ only under-par round for the two-day tournament.

The team is going to move on from this tournament and work to get better this next week, Lynn said. The Eagles’ next event will be Sept. 28-29 when they travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico to play in the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate.
