The Oklahoma Christian University women’s golf team earned first as a team, while Anna Arrese Cortadellas claimed the individual title at the Desert Golf Classic in Las Vegas on Monday and Tuesday.

Going into the tournament, senior Catherine Odgers said it was difficult to get fully prepared, due to the late weather conditions.

“It’s obviously been really hard the last few weeks with the inconsistent weather,” Odgers said. “I think all the girls are going into the tournament with a positive attitude, but I wouldn’t say we all feel completely prepared.”

The lack of preparation didn’t faze the women as they ended day one at second place with a team score of 317, three shots behind the leader.

Cortadellas posted a 77 and was tied at fourth in the individual rankings, five shots behind the leader. Teammate, Mesich posted a 78, placing her at seventh after the first day. India Matthews was sitting at 13th after the first day with a 79.

Allison Sell and Odgers kept all five players in the top 30 after the first day, with Sell’s 83 and Odgers’ 84.

The Lady Eagles bounced back the second day, posting a score of 306 – 11 strokes better than the first round.

Cortadellas posted a 71 – one under par. Meisch shot another 78 for the Lady Eagles, placing her at seventh and aiding the championship for the women’s team.

The second day proved favorable for Oklahoma Christian as the Lady Eagles left with two titles, one for the team and one for Cortadellas.

This is Cortadellas’ sixth individual title and the team’s second in school history.

Women’s Golf Head Coach Greg Lynn said he was very pleased with Cortadellas’ play, and said she earned this one.

“What a day,” Lynn said. “I’m so happy for Anna. She has worked so hard these last three months getting ready. I’m so proud of the way we played with two big-time Division II programs in UCO and Midwestern State.”

According to Lynn, it was definitely a group effort that earned the title for the Lady Eagles. He pointed out one specific player who came up clutch on the last day.

“Anna played great and Audrey was steady,” Lynn said. “Cat’s [Odgers] 77 in my opinion was one of the best rounds of the day. The girls all contributed over the two days. This was a team win.”

Odgers said the pressure of the competition did not affect her play.

“I try and go into every tournament with the best, most positive attitude possible, and this one was no different,” Odgers said.

The Lady Eagles are back to action next Monday and Tuesday at Kickingbird Golf Club in Edmond for the Diffie Ford-Lincoln Invitational.
