Maci Rich recorded a career-best performance while Miranda and Katie Ostlund shined in the field events for the Lady Eagles at the first day of the Kansas Relays.

With her national qualifying and career-best time of 4:47.60, Rich placed ninth out of 32 in the 1,500-meter race at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas.

Reigning NCCAA student-athlete of the week Katie Ostlund placed fourth amongst a tough field of competitors. Katie launched her top throw to 131 feet, 2 inches.

Miranda Ostlund came in at sixth with a top mark of 127 feet, her season-best. Both top throws were well past the national qualifying standard. Miranda competed in the hammer throw as well. She again posted a national qualifying mark of 136 feet, 9 inches.

Layne Hammer competed in the 5,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 20:03.67.

McKenzie Stanford, who will wait to compete in the high jump, said this meet would be a test of what the team is made of.

“This meet will show really what our team is all about, as we are competing against literally the best teams in the country,” Stanford said. “We will be battle-tested and I hope we are ready to embrace that and compete well.”

The Kansas Relays will continue Friday. Events that had originally been scheduled for Saturday were moved to Friday because of inbound severe weather for the area on Saturday.
