Newsmaker: Spring Sing executive director Meg Garner

Every other week, The Talon interviews a member of the Oklahoma Christian University community, a “Newsmaker,” to answer questions about their role on campus.

On Feb. 3, The Talon interviewed Meg Garner, the executive director of Spring Sing this year.

How did you become interested in becoming the Spring Sing executive director? How did you land the position?

“I’ve always wanted to be executive director. I knew when I came to Oklahoma Christian that it was my goal. I directed my freshman year and last year. Then I just applied at the end of last year, I interviewed, and I got the position!”

Are you doing anything different from last year’s show?

“I picked the overall theme so that the club shows would be a little more specific. Seasons is less of a broad theme, and so the Spring Sing directors have to pick something a little more specific. For host songs, I wanted the host songs to have a little more of a homey, Oklahoman feel. They are a little more country leaning, if you will.”

What responsibilities do you have as the executive director?

“First, I pick the overall theme, and then I pick my executive team. I have a club coordinator, an assistant director, a marketing director, advertising director, lobby and set designer, band director, host director, and there are several other roles. I think the biggest part of my job is communication. I have to get information from certain people in their roles to other people, and they come to me with questions. I also do a lot of organization like making spreadsheets for every club for their waivers and putting them in their folders. I also approve club stuff, like lyrics, costumes, and banners.”

How did people get their positions on the executive team?

“I choose them. I tried really hard to pick people from each club so that there’s some club representation. I just asked a bunch of people, and whoever said yes got the position.”

Are there any old Spring Sing practices or traditions that you would like to incorporate?

“Part of what I’m trying to do with the hosts is inspired by how hosts used to be in the early 2000s. It is a little more casual and a little more country, homey feeling with more focus on vocals and the style of music rather than on the presentation.”

What are you excited about for the club’s themes?

“I’m really excited for all of them. I like all the themes this year. They’re not necessarily movie characters. It’s all characters that don’t have specific storylines. They’re just like mythical characters. I truly think they’re all really creative and very good.”

Are there any plans for Alumni Outreach?

“I think Spring Sing is the biggest Alumni Outreach that Oklahoma Christian has. In my opinion, it’s the biggest outreach for prospective students too. I think it’s our best advertising, so my advertising executive is reaching out to our alumni. We are also doing something special for alumni, and it’s going to be a surprise.”

Are there any plans to improve videography and preserve Spring Sing videos?

“I definitely would like to have some high quality videos. It is definitely one of the things that I want to do before I’m done with Spring Sing, and that is to update all the archives so that people have access to high quality videos of all the shows.”
