With the upcoming flu season on the horizon once more, Oklahoma Christian University and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation are both looking to help students combat the disease by reminding them of the importance of flu vaccinations.
“You come back from break and you are used to being in your own home, around your own family and suddenly, you come back to school and you are surrounded by over 2,000 people everyday,” Becker said. “You are sharing cafeteria trays and forks, people are coughing into their hands and touching doorknobs and together with all the stress and tiredness, I think it all just meshes together for people to start coming down with the flu.”
Unlike the seasonal flu, pandemics occur when a new virus emerges. According to CNN, the result is something “mankind has never seen before, a pathogen that can spread easily from person to defenseless person—our immune systems never primed to launch any sort of defense.”
