Meet the Student Government Executive team

As campus activities are in full swing this semester, the Student Government Association (SGA) continues to play a key role in representing student voices and organizing events that amplify student life.

The Talon interviewed five SGA executive team committee heads to learn more about their roles, goals, and contributions to student life at Oklahoma Christian this year.

Activities: Addie Neal

Major: Family and Human Development

What’s the most rewarding aspect of participating in SGA?

“It’s so fruitful whenever you throw an event and everything goes well and you can tell that you are making everyone happy and brightening their day because school can get hard.”

What are your goals for this academic year?

“I would say to make SGA a prominent thing on campus that is very useful for the students and for just like, for serving them and for just helping.”

What are you looking forward to this school year?

“I’m looking forward to at the end of the school year looking back and seeing all the things that we cumulatively built throughout the year with SGA. It’s hard to see how much you’re involved in student life, but when you look back at it in the end you’re like oh we did provide all of these things, so we’re doing our job.”

Are there any upcoming events students should know about?

“We have talked about throwing a Halloween party on Halloween or a Harvest festival maybe next semester.”

Spiritual Life: Joel Hendricks

Major: Math

What’s your favorite aspect of SGA?

“My favorite aspect of student government is the fact that we stand for students.”

What events have you planned for this year?

“We have a candlelight devo that I planned for this Friday night, and I’m planning on making some stickers with a spiritual life tag on it.”

What’s your favorite SGA memory?

“My favorite student government memory was last year during the glow run, we got a lot of glow sticks and just cracked them for an hour before the glow run started and threw them at people.”

Academic: Sydney Byers

Major: Double Major in Family Science and Vocational Ministry

What are your goals for this school year?

“I’m working with Dr. Starr, and we have a team of people from a bunch of different departments, and we’re working on stuff like the curriculum for study abroad and how the Common Core is working.”

How are you planning on accomplishing these goals?

“I’m excited for the work we’re doing with study abroad. A lot of majors seem to find problems with going to study abroad just with their coursework, and so we’re working on making it more accessible and to strengthen our advertising efforts, especially as students are coming into the university. We’re working to make sure that all of the Gen Eds are good, like, we don’t want people to be taking pointless classes. That’s kind of the running joke is that, oh, you’re taking classes for no reason, but we want to make sure that all of the classes that are being offered and taken by students are actually valuable and meaningful in some way.”

Appropriations: Teagan Henson

Major: Accounting, Finance

What have you learned from being a part of SGA?

“What it takes to work with different people, different groups, and how everyone has a different perspective on SGA.”

What’s your goal for Oklahoma Christian this semester?

“I think we’ve done a good job with campus-wide engagement, especially when it comes to sports games. We’ve really helped get those more hyped up and exciting.”

Are there any upcoming events you’re excited for?

“I think we’re planning the girls volleyball team to play on Halloween. I think we’re planning a big shindig for that, that game. So that’s probably what I’m looking forward to.”

Campus Improvement: Kelsey Young

Major: Digital Marketing

What do you enjoy most about student government?

“I would say just how we get to be like such representatives of the students and just like everything that goes on campus, and just how we get to be a main factor of things that need to be changed and worked out on the campus.”

Are there any major projects or events that you’re looking forward to?

“As one of the committee heads for campus improvement, we’re really just trying to highlight little groups on campus that maybe don’t get a lot of support or encouragement.”

What’s the most unexpected or funny suggestion you’ve heard for campus improvement?

“Someone suggested building an outside pool in North Campus, which was an interesting one.”
