Men’s bowling takes fourth in season opener

The Oklahoma Christian University men’s bowling team kicked off their 2024 season by competing at the Midwest Collegiate Championships in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, last weekend. Graduate assistant coach, Leotis Johnson, spoke on the team’s expectations going into the tournament.

“We had pretty high expectations. We understand the type of talent that we have on this team. This is a new tournament for us, so we did not really have too much of an expectation as to what to expect there,” Johnson said. “We knew there were going to be a lot of good schools here, so it was a good test to see where we were at coming into this year.”

On the first day, Oklahoma Christian rolled five traditional games, in which five players from the team bowled and summed their scores for each game. They ended the day in tenth place.

The next day, the team qualified for match play after placing eighth with a cumulative score of 8,573 in their sixteen Baker Games. The team passed by a tight margin of just four pins.

In their first matchup, the Oklahoma Christian bowlers faced the number one seed, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), in a two out of three contest. After taking a loss in round one, the Eagles claimed both the following rounds, winning two to one and advancing themselves to the semifinals.

The team lost two to zero in the next matchup versus the defending national champions from Webber International University. This loss caused Oklahoma Christian to fall to the fifth seed and ultimately place fourth out of the 53 teams competing.

In preparation for events, the bowling team trains five days a week to improve and keep their skills sharp. Johnson commented on the team’s performance at this tournament.

“We did really well for this tournament, so that gives us a good outlook on what to expect for the rest of the season,” Johnson said.

This tournament marks the first time Johnson served as graduate assistant coach. Coming from the Oklahoma Christian bowling team himself, Johnson feels he can identify with the players.

“I was a member of this team, so I have a feel with the players already—you know?” Johnson said. “I have just gotta get more adjusted to finding that balance of being a coach and a friend to them.”

Next up, the men’s bowling team will be competing at the Columbia 300 Western Shootout in Indianapolis, Indiana.
