Weekly Sports Update Feb. 25- April. 3

MLB lockout

After an off-and-on negotiation session over 12 hours long, the MLB players and owners did not reach an agreement before the Feb. 28 deadline and have officially canceled all games between March 31 and April 5. This cancellation is the second time the league has been forced to miss games due to a work stoppage, with the last cancellation in 1994 and 1995 during the players’ strike  costing the league over 900 games and the 1994 World Series.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred held a press conference following the official decision.

“We worked hard to avoid an outcome that’s bad for our fans, bad for our players and bad for our clubs,” Manfred said. “I want to assure our fans that our failure to reach an agreement was not due to a lack of effort by either party.”

The two sides will continue to meet in hopes of coming to an eventual agreement. A new deadline for an agreement has not been set up at this time, and reports have said although progress was made during the negotiation session, the two sides still have many disagreements.

March Madness

The NCAA college basketball tournament and March Madness are right around the corner. ESPN bracket expert Joe Lunardi currently has Gonzaga, Arizona, Baylor and Auburn for No. 1 seeds. Kansas, Kentucky, Duke and Wisconsin are currently No. 2 seeds, according to Lunardi.

College basketball

A historic day in college basketball occurred when each top six team lost on Saturday, Feb. 26, including No. 1 Gonzaga’s loss to St. Mary.

Because of this upset, there were a few shake-ups inside the top five. Baylor jumped to No. 3 after beating Kansas, and Duke went to No. 2. Gonzaga stayed at No. 1 despite their loss.

Aaron Rodgers

Drama surrounding Green Bay Packers quarterback continues with questions as to whether or not the back-to-back MVP will return to the team for the 2022-2023 season.

According to a report by Jeff Howe from The Athletic, most of the Green Bay organization and the  league sees Rodgers  returning to the Packers. This followed a report by Dianna Russini claiming  Rodgers to be asking for at least $50 million per year in his next contract extension. This report was said to be false by Rodgers himself via The Pat Mcafee Show.

Kyler Murray

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray released a statement through his agent Erik Burkhardt addressing his current situation with the team.

“It is now simply up to the Cardinals to decide if they prioritize their rapidly improving 24-year-old, already two-time Pro Bowler who led the organization from three wins prior to his arrival to 11 wins and their first playoff appearance in five years,” Burkhardt said. “Actions speak louder than words.”
