Women of Oklahoma Christian University take on the State Capitol

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, members of Oklahoma Christian University’s Women Who Lead club, along with students from the Women’s Mentorship class, accepted a special invitation to tour the Oklahoma State Capitol. During their visit, they had the opportunity to meet and hear from several women of faith serving in political roles. The tour was guided by Louis Jackson, advisor and assistant to Commissioner Brian Bingman.

The group began their visit on the floor of the Senate Chamber, where they had the opportunity to learn more about the state’s legislative process and the historical significance of the room. This stop featured a conversation with State Senator Kristin Thompson, who shared insights into her journey in public service.

Following their visit to the Senate Chamber, the women were welcomed onto the floor of the House of Representatives. There, they spoke with State Representative Tammy West, who serves Oklahoma’s 84th district. Representative West shared highlights from her career, expressing pride in her legislative achievements and detailing some of the key bills she has championed.

Accompanying the group at lunch were Field Representative Katrina Harris, Senior Associate Maddy Hague, Director of Media Relations Carolina Estes, and Director of Communications for the Republican Caucus Tori Garrett, who is also an Oklahoma Christian alumna. Each of these women shared insights into their unique career journeys, discussing the transitions that led them to their current roles. They emphasized that one’s college degree does not necessarily determine one’s professional path.

Other highlights from the tour included a walk through the Hall of Governors. The group also visited the office of Lieutenant Governor Philip Pinnell. Followed by a tour of Governor Kevin Stitt’s office. They were then welcomed into the Blue Room, a space often used for official ceremonies and receptions.

The tour concluded with a visit to the Oklahoma Supreme Court chamber, where the group engaged in a discussion with Vice Chief Justice Dana Kuehn, who shared perspectives on the judiciary’s role in state governance and the importance of faith and leadership in public service.
