Every week, Talon News interviews a member of the Oklahoma Christian University community, a “Newsmaker,” to answer questions about their role on campus.
On October 27, Talon News interviewed AM supervisor Sherri Exum.
What was your background before Oklahoma Christian, and how long have you been here?
“I started January 17, 2022. I was a front house manager at Applebee’s in Florida for 17 years. My family was also in the carnival business. My husband and I would travel around. When my sons would get off of school in the Summer, we would travel around for a couple of months.”
What are the most rewarding parts of your job?
“Seeing you guys, really, I like being around you guys! On the weekends I say, “Oh no, I’m here at the house.” I like seeing you guys. I like being around people. Since I’ve been here, I’ve gone to every graduation. And I know some more who are graduating this coming year. I’ve met a lot of the parents that come to visit and the kids will come up and say “Mom, dad, this is Sherri”. It’s nice to meet people from all over the place.”
What student, or students make you smile the most?
“There are some of the boys I know that live in California, and when they were having all the fires there, it’s like, oh my gosh, I’m so glad you’re safe, I worried about them. You know, I worry about a lot of kids.”
What is a typical day in your life?
“I get up early, get ready, and come here. Then when I get here, I’m like, “Oh, I have to cut cucumbers today. Just getting everything ready. Then, I go home and hang out with the dogs and goof off until my son cooks dinner. Then we just hang out and watch a movie sometimes, and please, I’m in bed by 9:30 half the time.”
How did you hear about us and all that? How’d you hear about the job?
“I worked at Cattleman’s, and they’re a little crazy up there. Oh that was a far drive. And the first time it snowed, I was petrified, I didn’t drive in snow that much. I thought, I need to find something closer. So, I went on Indeed and found this and knew it was right up the road. Then the ladies that were here, Ginger and Katrina, told me to come in for an interview. That’s when I started right after that when school came back in.”
How do you like your coworkers and boss?
“Kurt Hermanson is very nice. When my husband was sick before he passed away, he would ask how everything was going. He always said, “You don’t have to come to work”. But, working gave me something to do when my husband passed away. It helped me out, I was like, “Okay, I’m around the kids”. Lauren’s also a great boss too, and the other ladies. But, we like everybody, it’s like we chime together in the kitchen and in the front house.”
