2022 Oscars Recap

On Sunday, March 27, 2022, the 94th Annual Academy Awards was televised live on ABC.

The ceremony was held in the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center. The Oscars have been held at this location since 2002, but this was the first year back after last year’s socially distanced ceremony in the downtown Los Angeles Union Station.

While the Academy Awards has not had a host for the past three years, this year the show featured three hostesses who each took the helm for one hour of the broadcast. The three hostesses were Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. In addition, Vanessa Hudgens, Brandon Maxwell and Terrence Jenkins hosted the Oscars pre-show.

In addition to the hosts, the Oscars had many other star-studded guests who presented awards. These include Lady Gaga, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lily James, Anthony Hopkins, Tiffany Haddish and Jennifer Garner, among others.

The night was historic, featuring the first live performance of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Disney’s “Encanto” and Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife. This altercation took place moments before Smith was awarded the Best Actor award for the film “King Richard.”

Despite “The Power of the Dog” leading nominations with 12 award possibilities, “Dune” took home the most awards. The film claimed six Oscars, including awards for visual effects and cinematography. “CODA” won the Best Picture award and Best Supporting Actor, the latter of which was given to Troy Kotsur, the second deaf actor to win an Oscar.
