2023 Golden Globes Recap

The 80th Golden Globes were held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA.

Aired on NBC and streamed on Peacock simultaneously, the ceremony was hosted by actor and comedian Jerrod Carmichael. The event honored the best in film and television from various 2022 productions.

2023’s Golden Globes aimed to make a comeback and clean up its reputation as the ceremony and organization surrounding it has been sinking into scandals due to finances and lack of diversity among the higher-ups and nominations.

During 2021’s ceremony, actors accepted awards remotely, while last year NBC refused to air the ceremony at all. Additionally, the Golden Globes have always sat in the shadow of the higher-viewed and forthcoming Oscars, which will air on March 12.

2022 proved to be a big year for movies, particularly sequels. The long-awaited follow-up to 1986’s Top Gun was released in May while Avatar: The Way of Water closed the year with a December release.

The first Avatar film, released in 2009, remains the top grossing film of all time, peaking at just under $3,000,000,000.

The Golden Globe nominees were first announced on Dec. 12, 2022. While a wide variety of film and television were selected, many bigger productions gained multiple nominations.

Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis was a major player in this year’s ceremony, gaining nominations for Best Director (Luhrmann), Best Actor (Austin Butler) and Best Film. While Luhrmann and the film as a whole lost their respective awards to Steven Spielberg and his film The Fabelmans, Butler won for his portrayal of Elvis Presley.

Everything Everywhere All at Once also gained multiple nominations, mostly in the acting field. The film was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan). While Curtis was not successful, Yeoh and Quan took home the Golden Globe in their respective categories.

The ceremony consisted of multiple first-time Golden Globe winners such as Evan Peters, who portrayed Jeffrey Dahmer in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Additionally, Zendaya won her first Golden Globe award for her performance in the HBO series Euphoria

While Angela Bassett, who played Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, had previously won an award in 1994, her Best Supporting Actress win marked the first time an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe won a major individual acting award.

Another notable moment of the evening came when the annual Cecil B. DeMille award was presented to actor and comedian Eddie Murphy for his outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.

Ryan Murphy, a television writer, was also honored, receiving the Carol Burnette award for outstanding contributions to television.
