Where you see a movie can have a huge impact on your experience. The size of the screen, the comfort of the seats, the quality of the speaker system, ticket prices and more can make a difference in how much you are able to fully enjoy what a film has to offer.
There are five movie theaters located within 10 miles of Oklahoma Christian University’s campus. I will go over things I like and dislike about each of them. Some of them have more to like than dislike and vice versa, but not one of them is flat-out awful. Without further ado, let us begin.
Kickingbird Cinema
1225 East Danforth Rd.
Kickingbird Cinema is a slightly less than average-sized theater located in Edmond. Walking through the doors feels akin to traveling back in time to the late 1980s or early 1990s from the design of the lobby and the concession stand. They have added 3D-capable projectors to several of their auditoriums over the years and may have made other updates as well. To be completely honest, I have not seen a film here since 2012, which was my first and only time. However, this is not because it was so bad I never wanted to go back, I just believe the competition offers higher video and audio quality at a lower price. I also remember not being too impressed with the seats, but those may have been updated since my last visit. Kickingbird does not display their ticket prices online, but I believe they are around $7.50.
AMC Quail Springs 24
2501 West Memorial Rd. Ste. E
Quail is the largest theater on this list. They have at least one IMAX auditorium and offer several other enhanced viewing options as well. The standard auditorium format is great, too. I have never had anything other than great movie-watching experiences here. However, I only go here when the movie I want to see is not playing anywhere else because of its location. The mall itself is easy enough to get to, but in order to get to the theater, you have to walk quite a ways through the mall. The theater is on the bottom floor in the food court, which is in the middle of the mall. There is no direct entrance. As parking can sometimes be an issue at the mall in addition to this, I would recommend arriving at least 10 minutes prior to show time. I would also recommend going for a matinee if possible, as the prices are a bit high. Discount day is on Tuesday, but it is the least generous discount day on this list.
AMC Penn Square 10
1901 N.W. Expressway
This is another AMC, so it is quite similar to Quail Springs. However, Penn Square has its own direct entrance as well as leather recliners in each auditorium. The screens are all massive, and the sound system is outstanding. Because of these perks it possesses over the Quail theater, Penn is a dollar or two more expensive per ticket.
Cinemark Tinseltown and XD
6001 Martin Luther King Blvd.
This has been my theater of choice for years. It is by far the most cost-effective option on this list. Matinees are a little over $4, and later showings are only a couple dollars more, around $6. 3D and XD (Cinemark’s brand of IMAX) tickets are about $10 and are usually cheaper than regular tickets at AMC. Discount day here is also on Tuesdays, and regular tickets are $4 all day, while enhanced viewing options are discounted as well. The seats are not the best, and you will probably have to wait in line for a while to get your tickets, but I think it is well worth it.
Showbiz Cinemas Edmond
3001 Market St. (off of Covell)
This theater only opened about two months ago, but I am really enjoying it. All of the auditoriums have basically the same setup as Penn Square, but at half the price. Standard tickets are $10.50 but only $5 on Tuesdays. In addition to movies, Showbiz also has a sizable bowling alley and a large selection of arcade games. It is basically Main Event but with a movie theater. The concessions are self-serve, and you pay before you enter your theater. I would recommend everyone try this place out at least once.
Drew Eckhart is a sophomore history and pre-law major from Edmond, OK. He has loved movies for as long as he can remember but thinks his passion really began when he watched “The Dark Knight” for the first time in theaters. His favorite type of movie blends comedy and drama seamlessly, and he loves great action films. In Drew’s free time, he enjoys reading and playing video games, as well as watching TV and movies. His favorite TV show is “BoJack Horseman” and his favorite movie is “Whiplash.”
